Default GIS build in Perth, Australia

    Hi all

Just bought the plans for the GIS, and am starting from absolute scratch - my signature quote says it all. Looking forward to buying timber here in Perth and see that someone built a PDR recently in Perth, and they have listed some links for timber sources locally. Looks like this forum will be really useful, so be prepared for some newbie questions.

Couldn't find any evidence in this forum of a GIS being built in Perth - apparently some plans have been bought by folks over here. If anyone knows anyone with experience building this type of boat who lives in Perth, I'd like to be their new friend.

Just have to get my shoulder rebuilt first (old basketball injury), then I'll be up and at it with my 13 yo son.
    Regards

    Howdy John,

The Dark Green GIS on my website lives somewhere in Perth now. I think it was the third or fourth one built. Used to live in South Australia.

Don't know who owns it now ... I could perhaps track down through Duck Flat who were the ones who sold it for the previous owner.

Default GIS Build in Perth, Australia

    Hi Glen

Honest answer is that it's not, but it's still happening and awaits the October holidays. I had surgery on my shoulder that has worked a treat, but was in a sling for 6 weeks. I am currently trying to source the plywood in Perth at a reasonable price.

    Cheers

    Howdy,

A number of build projects have been held up by shoulder problems in the past year. Glad you are on the mend!

Default Bought the timber and epoxy

Finally, have bought some of the timber, from Morgan's Timber in Bibra Lake, and the epoxy from Charlie Urwin in Welshpool. Think I'll make the stem first - it looks easy! Hope to get the courage to loft the panels and cut them out in the next few days.

Thumbs up Days 1-2: The Stem

Behold, the first thing I have ever shaped - The Stem! A piece of Western Red Cedar, that is fatter at the top and thinner at the bottom. This, apparently, goes at the pointy end of the boat. Won't epoxy it yet, as I'm sure it may need fine adjustments in the dry fit process, but it looks pretty damn close to spec to me. Now, just have to put it somewhere safe so I don't use it as a paint stirrer or something ..)

My blog link is shown below. I think I'll put only the really significant pictures on this site, letting Google do all the hosting - hope that's the right thing to do?

Lofting is next. I have a friend called Lofty - I shall ask if he wants to help.

    John -

    Welcome to the madness.

I, too, started with the stem (this past April) and I am about to dry-fit the hull assembly. I pretty well impressed myself with that stem - who knew I could make something like that?

This boat building is a lot of fun and very satisfying.

I see your shop has that one essential piece of gear - a moaning chair. Good!

Have fun. Keep us up to date.

Well, it must feel nice to have the most complex fitted part of the boat done!

Unhappy First moan heard in Perth, Australia

Now I know why BobWes calls it a "moaning chair".

Doing the side panel (first one), my line for the aft, chine line, as it approaches the aft end, takes a dip in then out again. Of course, I planed to the line with surprising skill and accuracy for a complete beginner, blissfully unaware that I'd not marked the line accurately in the first place.

Don't know whether you can see the error in the attached photo, but is this a case of "Start Again", or can it be rectified by more planing, or just make the second side exactly the same, error and all, and fix with lots of epoxy?

    Any advice would be appreciated.

Realize that I am only a few months ahead of you in boat building experience so I may be completely wrong in what I am about to tell you...

What you've done is not the end of the world (notice how the sun will come up where it is supposed to tomorrow). I'd say, "Fix it." Draw a fair line, use the plane to trim the ply to the line and duplicate it for the other side (use the first side as a pattern).

One other essential piece of equipment that nicely complements the moaning chair is the cooler (you may know it as an "Esky"). Keep your favorite beverage on ice in the cooler and it'll be waiting for you to enjoy in your moaning chair at the end of the day.

    Hi Bob
Thanks for the prompt offer of assistance. That is my initial feeling too, but it will make the length of the transom / side a little shorter, so I wonder what compensation I'll need to make down the track. I think I'll watch the cricket on TV (3rd Test between West Indies and Australia is being played in Perth right now) and ponder a little longer.
