Y'know, I've just thought of a severe lack in vB forum software. As well as the "like" button, it should have a "Groan this post" for when people make terrible puns.:D

Getting ready to mount some hardware. Should I through bolt the deadeye to the mast, which is what I was planning, or is screwing it in place adequate? Likewise for the down haul cleat?
Thanks! Going to put an order in tonight for the blocks.
MIK has recommended through bolt generally. I'm a rebel and screwed using really long stainless with epoxy on the threads. But I also used a cheek block rather than a dead eye because I had one free.

Thanks. I was thinking along the same lines as you, but think I'll through bolt what I can. Maybe screw on the cleat for the halyard.
i've Moderated on the bolting aspect.
Rudder fittings .. ALWAYS bolted :)
Anything that might take a direct pull in a perfect direction to extract a screw should be bolted - like the downhaul.
But using machine screws (metal threads are the same thing in Oz)without nuts is fine in other places.
Drill out the hole so that it is the right size to allow the thread to bite - drive one in to make sure it works.
Use a pipe cleaner or twisted paper or cotton bud to get the glue into the hole
Wash the fastenings in acetone or other solvent and fish them out dumping them on a clean cloth or kitchen paper.
Dip fastenings into epoxy and drive them home. I'd say that 3/16" diameter machine screws with 3/4" bite are going to move for no man. Any data otherwise or with measured lengths needed for certain diameters would be gratefully accepted.

IIRC the WEST System book* has data on various fastenings set in epoxy, including load to failure.
*Meaning "The Gougeon Brothers on Boat Construction".
That wonderful book is now free for download from West Systems.

Pages 131, 132 and 133 are the ones you want for fasteners loaded in tension.
Thanks for the link and information. That manual looks pretty complete! I'm uncertain about the location of the deadeye for the down haul. The rigging website says to put it on the "back" face of the mast. I'm taking this means the aft face. Is this correct?
The downhaul for the lug rig goes on the deck to the side of the mast. The opposite side to the halyard cleat.

Thanks for the reply. I had typed the message and then somehow lost it and then re typed in a rush. Doh! I meant the deadeye for the halyard at the top of the mast. I found some photos where I could see it and it looks to be on the aft face.
The clock is ticking B-2! I want to ask you questions about your rig, but you have no time to spend messing with answers! The Gathering is approaching; build, man, build!!!

I know, I know. Things can take a while when you don't know what you're doing! Got holes drilled in spars and coated, screw holes filled, rudder box assembled and mounted (that was a bit of a trial). Deadeye mounted on the mast. Mast fit to partner and resealed. I'm Having a friend over this week that knows about sailing to assist me with setting up the sail and think I'll set the down haul saddle then and cleat for the halyard. Waiting on order from Duckworks. Then I think it should be ready.
