This is more to stir Mike up.

There are a lot of defects to this drawing. It is what Bolger would call a cartoon. A non existent boat.

    Just under 20ft - beam of 4 (6m x 1.2)

    Nice!!!

Norseboat: the gaff yes, the rest of the boat, no.

Looks like a wicked and fast machine for the race course however. But if the cartoon would become reality probably very unstable as well. Exiting however!

I think Mike would find something like that fun though.

The thing I like is that is just a big box ... so it would be very counterintuitive to many that such a boat could actually work.

You could probably put a rough version of the hull together in quite a short time. I wouldn't worry about a self draining cockpit .. just keep it small.

Not really fixed on the rig type either, but it is a nice way to get a lot of sail on a small mast. The mast is pretty tiny but stayed.

Flaring the hull seems to have more drawbacks than benefits on these proportions (mostly building difficulty.

Didn't work out the CE or CLR.

Just stirrin the possum with that one. Don't let it scare you away just yet. Was just one of my thoughts. You realise it would qualify for the Sydney Gaffer's regatta. Wonder if it would give the 18 footers a bit of a scare?

Like MIK said, there are a lot of defects in his drawing.

I don't much like the Norseboat gaff idea though. It's out of place with the square lines of the boat and the curved Gaff is an unnecessary complication in the construction.

I think that with a relatively powerful rowing crew a lot of thought has to go in to what the rig is actually for on a raid boat. In many (most?) conditions the boat would probably make more speed to windward under oars, especially if the rig could be easily struck.

My preference would be a rig optimised for downwind blasting with very little emphasis on windward performance - the cartoon is getting close to this with the relatively small upwind sail area and the ability to fly a big asymmetric tacked to the stemhead. If it were my boat I would be tempted to reduce the mainsail area, have a little blade-like jib and a choice of kites.

I suppose it depends on the format of the raid - whether it is all sail/oar or whether they have sail only races.

I agree a lot with Clarkey's point about how to prioritize the abilities of the boat. For a RAID, I agree that lets have a boat that can really be powered straight up the rumb line under oars. Then a large sail can be put up for fast reaching and downwind sailing. This was my approach for my rowboat Drake. We positively fly up wind under oars, and rocket downwind under a lugsail. Not only tha but the mast can be taken down for the rowing part....this is key. This is one format of RAIDING.

The other is what we started up at Wooden Boat, the Small Reach Regatta. It is not a competative event, so who cares if we try to sail upwind and it takes longer than rowing. Why not leave the mast up to increase space inside the boat. The point is to have fun not win.

It looks like the design brief for this boat above is more oriented towards the former format. In that case sail rig is fitting. But, it isn't as pretty as the Goat. But in the second lower-key format, beauty is more important because we have the time to look around and admire the other boats.

To be able to give constructive feedback, I need a design brief. I have these criteria right in front of me when I design my boats. It can be easy to stray from the brief.

    Cheers,
    Clint

Hi Bob, not really launched, more floated to see how see behaves and test her buoyancy. Still trying to finish some bits but just wanted to see her floating. Also wanted to get some feedback to MIK about how she behaves on her side. Will be posting pictures in the morning but wanted MIK, as designer, who has done all this work to produce such a special singlehander, to have a look first.

    here's a couple for now,
