I really like the simplicity of the box mast. If it isn't a performance compromise either...

Any of you guys have some good box mast photos?

Thanks for the invite and the offer but I'm sticking with the box mast. We'll just have to come up with some other reason for a visit.

Clay - Good enough for L. Francis Herreshoff, good enough for me! That, plus it looks (to me) like the simplest mast to build.

The box mast is really nice and also very light to handle at 5.4kg. There are a number of pictures on the last pages of the Solo Expedition Boat thread, here is one

and a couple of pics of the mast in build on Chris's blog

    Thanks Brian,

The square mast looks right and proper on your boat. I'm giving those square jobs a second look

    Default Back on track...

I spent a lovely afternoon using a buddy's band saw and planer to mill a couple of 5/4x12"x6' planks of WRC into some 19x19mm and 45x19mm stock for bulkhead framing.

When done with the shop work we enjoyed a couple of cold beers while waiting for the coals to be ready. We grilled a couple of steaks and some zucchini for a thoroughly enjoyable dinner.

Rain in July is very rare around here, but we had enough of a rain shower to push us under cover for a few minutes.

No pics because, well, just how exciting is it to see sawdust being made? But, what with bringing home the plywood earlier this week and having the framing stock I suspect I'll post some progress pics in the next few days.

PS... I saw what may be the perfect for the "official" beer of the GIS - Scape Goat by Big Sky Brewing Co, of Wyoming. Haven't done proper field testing but it looks promising.

PPS... Timothy Lake in September sounds pretty interesting...

    Bob,

You gonna be done in time for Timothy Lake? That's good news! Or are you thinking of coming up to serve as ballast on someone else's boat? You might could talk my better-lookin' Twin - Thorne - into picking you up on his way by... assuming he makes it this year.

That ScapeGoat sounds - at least from the name - like an interesting beer. As the first GIS builder in North America, though, I took it upon myself to name an official beer for N.A.. Full Sail Ale, it is. Brewed right near here, in the beautiful Columbia River Gorge.

    http://www.fullsailbrewing.com/ipa.cfm

It's a worker-owned firm that turns out consistently good brews, both ales and lagers. The Session Black is brand new, and I haven't gotten around to trying it, but I will soon. Each and every one of their other products has been fully vetted. Some gently. Some riotously. But all passed with flying colors. And sometimes with flying boatbuilders as well A couple of their potions won Gold at last years Great American Beer Fest. But... what the hey... try the SGoat out, and if it passes muster as it passes your tonsils, we'll have another official beer. Now that I think about it, one can never really have too many official beers, now can one

    David,

As much as I'd like to have my Goat done in time for Timothy Lake this year, I think that is a bit ambitious... but, mmm... maybe... if the stars aligned just so... mmm... that is an interesting prospect... mmm... something worth pondering...

I was thinking more in terms of offering myself up as a dodger or ballast as needed... Your twin is welcome to ride shotgun with me - unless he is bringing everything he owns, in which case I'll follow him up the highway. Haven't talked to him about that trip so we'll see what his plans are...

I have no qualms with any form or flavor of Full Sail as the official beer of anything... I truly enjoy their brews. I did like the previous labels and look better than the current packaging but what the hey, the beer still tastes great.

So I heard, Mik, so I heard. That would be pretty cool if you could make it.

Just got an email from Chuck at Duckworks. They are collecting money from the PDR community. People are putting in another $20 each and some bigger contributions.

So amazing. So I guess I am going! Wow. Will be making visits to a number of wooden boat messabouts and will do talks or boat setup clinics or just talk informally to give some value back.

    Very touching.

    Mik,

I saw the DuckWorks item on Friday (pretty sure it was Friday) and thought that is a very nice gesture. It's not just the PDR community...

While I think the Timothy Lake Messabout would be a fun weekend (with or without my boat) anyway, if you can make it so much the better!

By the way, I am plotting and planning on how I can get my Goat ready enough - probably in rowing mode - to bring it to Timothy Lake. We'll see how that shapes up.

    Default Back at it...

As much fun as yesterday's lumber milling session was, it seemed more like an indirect - albeit necessary - step in the process than actually building something.

Today I am back at it - building boat parts!

Here is bulkhead #3 with the 45x19 mm framing cut and fit (the 19 mm square framing on the front side is cut, just not clamped in place in the pic):

I'll cut out the other bulkheads and related framing this week. I'll use my Furlough Friday (forced day off without pay due to the state budget problems) to epoxy the bulkheads (wet on wet) before gluing the frames.

    This is fun!

Just a friendly reminder--the side frames don't get put on bulkheads 2 and 4 until the seat tops are fit and installed...

But I'm sure you didn't miss that.
