Thanks for the tips, everybody. I think I'll go with Clint's plan, just because I seem to be able to make wood behave better than I can make epoxy behave. Or, at least, it usually involves less cursing. Much less cursing.

So far, I have not mixed alcohol and boat-building. This has meant a substantial change to my normal consumption patterns. But it is a sacrifice I feel is necessary for someone like me who doesn't know one end of a block plane from the other and is naturally clumsy to boot. Stone cold sober, I've already managed to cut myself twice, put a couple of small holes in one side panel, and mis-cut some of the staves for the centerboard. Lord knows how much damage I'd do if I was drinking my homebrew while building. I would like it to still be the "Ten Thumbs Boatyard" on launch day, not "Nine" or "Eight".

Please tell me it is only during actual boat-building activities that you refrain from alcohol, and not that you have given it up until your boat is completed. That would be a difficult, if not impossible, standard to live up to.

And it's not that there's anything wrong with losing a digit while building a boat. I mean, I might consider it a fair trade. But it's sort of self-limiting. After a few boats, well, ....

Well, there's never a dull moment here at the Ten Thumbs Boatyard. I once again require the board's collective wisdom.

My wife and I were flipping the boat over this morning and my end slipped from my grasp. It came down hard on the edge of a sawhorse and I heard a bad sound. Turns out that I put a crack in the bottom, running fore-aft, about 15cm long, maybe 12cm from the starboard chine, just forward of bulkhead 4. It's tight; hard to see unless you know just where to look. I couldn't get a good picture of it to post.

My inclination is to ignore it except to make sure that some epoxy gets inside when coating the bottom. My wife is lobbying for a strip of fiberglass tape to give it a little more structural integrity. We need a tie-breaker. All ideas welcome.

(Yes, it sometimes occurs to me that I might do LESS damage if I drank a bit while working on the boat. I certainly couldn't do MORE!)

OK, first things first. How long have you been married? I presume it's long enough that you'd have gotten over getting lost in the sheer rapture of reveling in the shining presence of your beloved's radiant beauty. At least that's the tack I'd be taking with your darling wife if I were you.

Second, your cracked bottom. I can sympathize. We put a couple of splits like you describe in the bottom of Sisu about a year ago - bouncing off some rocks & stumps while beaching on a very windy day. If the front buoyancy chamber is accessible (which is the area where I understand the split to be), I'd do a strip of fiberglass tape in epoxy over the split - just to reinforce. Just lay it right on & squeegee some add'l epoxy over to fill the weave. No need to fair it out - just make sure the two sides of the split are flush (not offset) - on the outside of the hull - as you leave it overnight to set up.

If, on the other hand, you can only access the split from the bottom of the boat, my first thought would be to grind a slight recess to accept your tape/epoxy and leave it close to flush with the surrounding surfaces after application.Sorta like half of a Payson Butt joint. That version I'd be sure to fill and fair before priming & painting.

Now, Mik will likely be along shortly to tell me how brilliant I am, and wonder - with all those brains - why I ain't rich yet Either that, or he'll point out a far easier, simpler solution, or some part of the problem I totally missed

You are correct regarding location: just forward of the bulkhead, not in the buoyancy tank. But it wouldn't matter anyway. I have just glued on the bottom and have not yet sealed up the tanks, so I would have easy access anyway. Worse for me, really. If the crack was inside the tank, no one would ever see the repair. It will be visible where it is. Ah well.

To answer your question, we've been married 15 years. I'm a very lucky man.

I'm moving this weekend. The house hunting has been more positive than I expected – I will be able to reduce my housing costs AND find a place with a garage (read: boat building work space!). However, I'm not likely to be in a house of my own (and the bank's) before the holidays. I'm moving into a storage unit this weekend. Well, not me personally. I'm moving just about everything I own into a storage unit. I will be moving in to a bedroom my ex and her boyfriend offered me in their place to save me the hassle of renting an apartment (over the years since the divorce, she and I have become friends - something that just never happened during the 14 years we were married). So, my advice is be civil no matter what, there will be a pay-off.



I don't plan to set my computer up at the temporary digs, so I'll be out of touch for a bit... I will check the forum as opportunities present themselves.


I do feel I am making some progress toward a better tomorrow... just not as fast as I'd like... But as soon as I'm in my own place I'll start building my GIS.

Hope you get her finished in time for Big Lagoon in May.

It does pay to stay on good terms with your ex - if at all possible. I lived with a woman for 7 years before we broke up. She married another friend, and we're all still tight. I stay with them when I visit Port Townsend. Her daughter is coming soon to visit us before she heads off for some international study in Peru. Her kids are great, and if she & I weren't still buddies, I'd have missed out on knowing them... and missed out on her & Rob's friendship all these years. Would have been a tragedy.
