Howdy Bjarne,

See how the gunwale has another piece of wood along the outside edge in the picture.

This is not really necessary, so you don't need to do it , but if you use a hard bit of wood about 6mm thick it makes the gunwale slightly more resistant to damage.

For the MAST ...
You can use the 16mm with no problems but there is one change:
The narrow staves for the mast need to have their width reduced by 8mm or the mast will end up bigger than designed.

This will be a bit heavier ... um 16/12=1.33 - so 30% heavier than making it of 12mm so it will be about the same weight as the original round mast.

Bjarne,

Is it possible to take your mast stock to a local cabinetmaker to plane down the 12mm? I know if we were to charge you to do this in my shop, it'd be about 1/2 hour = apporx. $30. A worthwhile investment to reduce the dreaded Extra Weight Aloft.

Hi Bjarne .... can you do me a little favour ...

Can you translate "Building a wooden boat in Denmark" into Danish for me?

Just want to add it to the title of the thread so other people can find it.

Hi Mik

In danish it's "Goat Island Skiff bygges i Danmark"
You can also use "Sejl-jolle bygges i Danmark".
Sejl-jolle is, rougly translated, small-boat with sail.

I'll have to consider what to do about the mast. If you say that the weight is about the same for both the hollow mast and the round mast. Then i would say it depends on the which one that's most easy to build ?

Reg. the gunwales, im not sure if i can find wood im that size, but since im gonna take the boat up and down close to something i dont know the word for, but you can see it here:

It's close to what you see on the picture, so im going to use this:

(a few words i dont know in english)

Remember the extra piece of timber on the gunwales is not completely necessary.

The word for the things to protect your boat when putting it in the water are "fenders"

I have made a little error when i were cutting out the bottom. I know that i have cutted more than 2 cm outside the lines, but anyway the bottom's side dont get all the way out to the side-panels. W are talking about 75-100 cm long, but the bottom is still covering some of the chine-logs (i think thats the name for the wood on the bottom of the side-panel), i think it's app. half of the chine-log is covered.
Do you have any suggestion to what i can do ??
I can ofcouse buy 2 new sheet of plywood and cut a new buttom, but if i can find another solution then i would prefer that.

Any idea is preciated!

Bjarne, This happened on a student boat once or twice. Is it only the midship area of the boat that that bottom is not wide enough or is it along the whole length of the chine log? To confirm, you have 1/2 the chine log covered...so that is less than half covered if you include the plywood side panel in the total width? Tell us for how long the bottom is not wide enough.

If small, butt joining a length of plywood to the missing width with extra f'glass was our solution. It was about 12-18" of length that we were lacking enough wood.

Cheers,
Clint

It's not so much that i expected, it's only 50-75 cm where the buttom not is wide enough. And the chine-logs is half covered with the plywood. And its only at the left side and it's exactly at the middle. Where it gap most is near the middle bulkhead. And the gap is close to 1 cm wide.
I'm going to cover the entire bottom with f'glass.

Bjarne,

Can you check the width of the bulkheads near that area to check that they are right? The bottom should fit fine.

We can work out a way of fixing the problem ... no worries. Need to know the cause so we can work out any other changes and the best method.

Yes, i can check the bulkheads, but i'm not sure that i can do anything about that part, becouse it's glued now. So i think we have to work with the bottom

Bjarne,

Can you check the bulkheads ... I just need to know where the error is because it might change some things later too.

Hey Mik

The bulkhead is 97 cm wide.
The rift is app. 110 cm long.
I have attached 2 images so you can see what went wrong

Ok, Good.

The bulkhead is pretty close to the right width. So that means that everything except the bottom will fit like normal ... good.

So we just need to fix the problem with the bottom.

That must mean the bottom is about 950 wide at that point. Check, and I will work out a nice way to fix it.
