Default Got my Goat Island Skiff plans!

Greeting! New comer here and this will be my first boat build ever. I initially was planning on a dory type build (16-18') but most models are a bit "tender" for sailing and being pointy on both ends not as roomy as a GIS. The GIS seems to be a fairly easy build for the quality of boat you get in the end so I think I chose wisely. I live in Manchester, New Hampshire and once done with my build I hope to sail out in the ocean near the coast. I'm going to gather materials this winter and chip away at the build of the smaller stuff until the snow is gone and move the final assembly outside.
I will be looking at all the posts I can concerning the GIS (and other boats) for new ideas to customize my boat a bit. I can't wait to get started! I will post pics of everything I do.

    Excellent! Another Northeast US build!

Check out this thread: https://www.woodworkforums.com/f169/n...2014-a-156316/ . I hope you'll be done in time to make the gathering.

You said on facebook that you liked callsign222's blog. Please do NOT mention this here on the forum or Christophe's already-swelled head might just pop.

Welcome here too. BOBWES also has a thread of his build which as you know from the forum was over a longer time buying bits through the building period.

    Best wishes

    Thanks Gents!
Overloading on info but still craving more! I wish I had thought of this last year! My son is only 3 1/2 and what made me want a boat is he is finally getting old enough to go out in my canoe fishing. I'm always trying to think of something to do with him to keep him occupied and to keep my wife from dragging us both to some mall or outlet or whatever. He is a handful and will not sit still so I put dual outriggers to stabilize it and then decided it needed a sail. It has a jib sail as it's main sail and it does a pretty good job but the dagger board is not the best. I have never been a fan of fiberglass/plastic boats and even my canoe has that damn metallic sound when the waves start slapping. The only logical solution was a wooden boat and so began my search a couple of months ago. Being broke most of the time lead me to the conclusion that building my own boat just makes sense to me. Being a welder/machinist all my life and also in the Army Guards as an engeneer I have always had the skills to build whatever I set my mind to.
I sailed some as a teenager at my friends camp way up in the north country and I'm dubbing with the canoe so I really have no experience to go on. I am reading all I can and trying to learn before I get out in big water and get into trouble. I'm very optimistic though and I'm a fast learner so I think I will be ok.

WHATEVER DUDE. I feel like I'm playing perpetual intellectual catch up with everyone else here, like I'm some red-headed stepchild walking disaster.

Aw, you know I'm just jealous of your superior sailing skills. Have to get a ding in when I can.

If you can call "capsized Goat more than anyone else on the planet" superior sailing skills I'll take it. Otherwise, I'm still trying to find my way out of this paper bag.

    So nice with another GIS!

I have many times wondered what would happen if MIK would get hit by a car. Hopefully he has arranged that somebody else would continue to sell the plans, or that they end up in public domain so this community of GIS building is not ending.

I second the motion! Weigh in with your thoughts on a gathering.

    Goat love = tough love.

(I can only hope that no Google-bot picks up on the term goat love and decides to provide links...)

You sure have lots of time for snippy responses but all I'm still seeing is someone else's Marsh Cat!
