Laminated chine logs for PD Goose
Looking over the Goose supplement, it instructs the use of laminated chine logs as per PDR plans. The justification for this is the relatively tight radius of the rocker of the PDR when using 3/4" x 3/4" stock. Just a cursory experiment in my shop with some solid doug fir of the same overall dimensions shows me that bending this stock is quite easy for the longer, and larger radius curves of the Goose rocker. Is there as reason that I'm missing in favor of lamination, or would I be good to go with using a one piece 'log? Sure would save a pile of work....

For that matter I think that good doug fir in 19mm x 19 mm solid will bend around the rocker of the PDR without problems. Of course, many folks wont be using such an excellent wood, and in the spirit of PDR economy may be using lesser grade framing lumber for construction, which could require slimmer dimensions for the bending. I just happen to have piles and piles of fir so I don't have to purchase framing material. If I had to purchase wood at retail prices for the framing of this boat, it wouldn't be prime clear doug fir, that's for sure!

HI Rick,
I did try to make the chine logs work out of hoop pine without laminations and it just wouldn't do it. So for the PDR I would probably still recommend laminating, though like you, the more experienced will try a solid piece and see if it can be bent OK
