Finally GOT PICS of WS RIG SAILING !!
Here are the First Sailing pics with the WS Rig and The 90 sq ft Dacron Lug Rig. any pointers on the Lug Rig Trim will be appreciated . I do plan to raise the mast base extension on the WS rig (its adjustable) about 6 in. higher so the sail will Clear the coaming better, but it worked fine like it was......The boat Pointed almost 30 deg to windward....at first I thought I was going Straight Upwind... with the WS Rig......It also did good with the Lug....I think I need to move the Yard further back....I have the block on the yard at about 50 %.....or so...not quite sure....but it just looks like it should go more downward on the yard, placing the sail more aft on the mast....does anyone else think so ???
The Balance on the helm seemed fine...almost neutral, maybe a little weather helm in the gusts....as you can see, there was not a lot of wind, but the boat moved real good.

Hi Mark,
Very nice to have the two sails going on the one day.
The interesting thing to me is that if you spend more money on the rig ... the boat goes faster (assuming you had to buy the windsurfer rig new).
The lug sail looks wonderful!!! Really good shape. Who did it for you?
Best wishes

Hi MIK,
don't Laugh, But I only paid 35.00 for that WS sail......Its a older design, which has a Fuller Cut and the battens rotate Freely..no Cams to worry about....Its a 8.0 m2....I also have a 7 m2 and 6m2 for heavy air..all for around the same price on Ebay...
I did get a newer more modern WS sail, a 8.5m2 Izzy...that has 2 cams on the bottom that gives a good draft shape for the power down low and then it gets pretty Flat toward the top 1/3 or so.....the idea behind it is to have your power low and then "exhaust" the air smoothly from the top....at least thats what they say...the top part of the sail is Your Exhaust .......I don't know how well that will work on a PDR, since its not going 25 mph......but who knows till I try it......It may be good in heavy air also, because its so Flat at the top.......I'll know after I try it.....if it doesn't work, I'll sell it on ebay to a Windsurfer. .
The Carbon Fiber mast I got used for about 150.00.....you can get cheaper used ones...or go with a epoxy/Glass WS mast...I saw some of them for around 50.00...used.
The Lug sail was ordered from Charles L. Duckworks over here. Of course the Boom and yard are aluminum tubing with Carbon Fiber Vinyl decal wraps......looks like CF at least I have since put a Buddy Bearing cover over the end of the boom, so it won't scratch the Varnish

Interesting employment of the WS rig
Mark:
Love what you are doing with the WS rig!
What did you use for the metal slotted plate where the foot of the WS mast is mounted to the deck? Was that from a WS board, custom made, or a McGyver job?
How did the sail performance compare between the two rigs in low and high wind conditions?
I am considering using a WS rig on a Portland Pudgy dinghy and curious about the power (CE) reportedly being lower in the WS rig and whether it will be less prone to capsize in higher wind conditions if the gusts "spill" out the top of the WS sail.
It also would appear that with the combination of mounting of the WS rig to your "main mast" and your slotted mount at the base, one could adjust the angle of the WS mast and tune the sail for various wind conditions. Also, with a busted rudder, you could technically steer the boat with just the sail by adjusting the WS angle.
What do you think?
PS....I am originally from NOLA, but now reside in SC.
