Mast storage in the Goat
Ideally I would use the mast in the stored position as the ridge pole for the boat cover but it doesn't appear it would fit inside as the designed length of the mast is about the same as the overall length of the hull. Letting it rest on top of the breast hook and transom top would put it in a good positon to support the tarp but I don't like the idea of building cradles for those areas. I guess it could be secured with line, though, with maybe a leather pad to protect the wood. How are others storing the masts and have any of you figured out how to let it serve as the central ridge under a boat cover?
I noticed the Jack of Mugabbe (sp?) has the mast stored right on the seats which suggests they either built the boat a little longer than designed or cut the mast a little shorter. Anyone care to comment about this?

Howdy MAM,
I don't have pics of the mast support for the GIS trailer setup from the BitingMidge.
But basically he uses ... hell's bells .. I am foggy about this!!!
hmmm I can't remember the back end so I hope his version is one of the alternatives I have here!!!
OK .. at the front end he uses a cradle for the mast that slips into the mast step and ties down to the downhaul or halyard saddles on the deck.
At the back he either uses a cross bar lined up with the rear support the hull sits on with holes drilled in it similar to this (but without the extra boat on top!!!)
The cross bar had a carpeted cradle for the mast.
OR it was two pieces of ply held apart by a spacer that slipped over the transom. The contrivance was carpeted where it contacted the transom (outdoor or boat carpet contact cemented in place) with the cradle on the top. Mast can be tied down to the tiller cutout in the transom.
By the way ... I do recommend that people get a long sailbag that the mainsail attached to the spars will slide into fully intact. And I would put this sailbag down in the hull as far as possible.
There are more PDRacer trailer pics here ... which might give some inspiration for the GOAT.

For mast storage I use the mast as a ridge pole as you described. I pad the mast with a piece of foam between it and the bow and transom, then secure it with two lines. To keep the mast from shifting sideways, I give each line one turn and a twist as it goes around the mast. No problems so far.
