Your 9'6" plans, for the Goat? I thought they were 9'ers. Fixed seat rowing is a lost art but plenty of people still want to do it: I think there is a niche there.
Richard, I'd just find the position for your bottom and then through trial and error get the position for the oarlocks.
Here is a blog I like on rowing

Clint,
I don't even know enough about rowing to ask questions or know what I should even be looking for, so bear with any silly questions I come up with.
Anyone making useful, easily understood info available would find a good audience.
I'm not sure how I stumbled on to it, but I found the blog, Rowing For Pleasure, about two weeks ago.
Thanks.

I too found that blog. You have to dig a bit but there's some interesting stuff in there, even a series of interesting articles by that Welsford chappy. I do feel I'm a rower at heart.
Your Drake looks intersting Clint and at over 17', a goodly sized boat too
I probably need something like that to complement Mik's flat water skiff and thence discover how I'm actually going to use the boats.
I really do need to decide what to do about Sixpence. The best solution would be for some kind soul to wander in and buy her from me ... but I can't bring myself to advertise her for sale. Note, I'm serious here, if anyone wants her, just say so, she's not getting used just sitting in the shed hoping she'll get built and I am finding the next stage a bit intimidating as far as cost and resources go.

I really like the workboat feeling of Drake and the strong Nordic hints.
The shorter ends than many will stop her from blowing around as much. A lot of boat for the length
(I will be talking about an aftertaste of blackberry and oak next)

Richard, Interesting to here you say that Drake could supplement the MSD b/c I was thinking that an MSD would supplement my Drake! For the early AM rows when the water is flat, an MSD would scoot. I am going to resist the urge to talk about Drake, but I will say that I have developed a stronger relationship with the boat (don't tell my wife that I use this language) as time has gone by and the design has proven herself. One of the reasons I like boats like this and the MSD came to me this morning taking a pee. (there is logic coming...) When you are sitting in a boat like Drake or MSD with secondary stability you can move around without the sensation that you could go over into the water at any moment. I look forward to rowing the MSD more.
I need to think about how to do this fixed-seat rowing thing on my website. Certainly, the MSD and Drake would be some designs on there, but I could use other ideas. Maybe:
--How to fit Oars to the boat (magic formula)
--How to fit oars to your rowing style
--how to fit you to your boat (oarlocks, foot rests, etc.)
--rowing technique in fixed seat
--what makes a good oar
--what makes a good rowboat for different conditions
--a collection of already known stuff from other sources like Pete Culler, etc.
What questions do people have about fixed seat rowing/rowboats, etc.
Cheers,
Clint

Clint,
I know you, Richard and others are experienced rowers and know what your style is... How about something (doesn't have to be much) for complete rowing novices like me?
Beginning
Rowing.
Basics.
What are the different styles?
Like that... Could be another part of the audience.
Thanks.
