Default Different approaches to setting up balance lug rigs

    See three pictures below:

Keyhavenpotters Keyhaven Scow- very little forward sail of the mast

Mik's GIS - between these other two

Ross Lillistone's Periwinkle - lots of sail forward of the mast, lower angle to the yard.

What's going on, what are the pet theories of these three Balance Lug rig aficionados?

There are no one complete theory of Balance Lug rig design and handling - IMHO.

    Robert is right.

With my sail setup I can't move the sail more forward than I have because the halyard position on the yard is about 50%. The halyard connection point cannot be further back than that because the sail will have more sail in front of the pivot and will tend to sheet on when a gust hits it.

I don't want to move the sail further back because you start losing the vang effect from the downhaul. The vanging effect from the downhaul is almost non existent from Brian's setup but he has a separate boom vang/kicker line to prevent the boom from raising.

    Good illustrative pictures!

    Best wishes
    Michael
