Hah. Very funny. Of course I'm still sanding - or should be. I've actually hit a block with this one. As soon as I start I get really annoyed that I'm having to do this, which impairs my ill-disciplined capacity to continue, so I stop.

On the other hand, I have just (within the last half-hour or so) put through an order for some le Tonk. Thanks for the heads-up on that one. Or perhaps I should hold the thanks in abeyance until I've found that it works . The testimonials do suggest that it is the Real Thing(TM), but we'll see. I've been bitten rather too hard by surface coating that are supposed to have been just that during this project (WEST 105/207 being the one outstanding exception). The Boss in fact makes threatening noises when I even slightly allude to the next boat...

I've no idea how long the stuff will take to get here, but I may have time to get the sanding finished. But not if I keep going at the current snail's pace (snails would actually be quicker, especially this lot).

    Cheers,
    Alex.

Really - due for this reason my BETH "YuanFen" does not look as beautiful as the piano... I do not have enough patience to do it. She is AS IS, but is ready to sail!

That trick of having DIY airplane plans laying around is supposed to be really effective for that......

    Hi Rob,

It's actually not the appearance but the servicability of the finish that has been worrying me: the current layer of varnish can be peeled off with a fingernail. Imagine what will happen in use...I'd be recoating the thing and waiting for it to dry with such frequency that the boat would only see water every 3 months or so. Bit of an exaggeration, but that's how it has been looking at the moment.

And I'm sure that your boat looks lovely .

    Cheers,
    Alex.

Now there's a thought - the (similar) scale rc plane plans method hasn't worked, but maybe you have a point :). Maybe just the mere mention of such a scheme might do the trick ;). In reality, however, the Boss has got fed up with my continual moaning and banging on about finishes and doesn't want to see (or hear) a repeat performance.

Fingers crossed that le Tonk reverses the the situation! (I'm not holding my breathe, though.)

    Cheers,
    Alex.

Can you come up here & type in about 4 months worth of petty cash dockets (before they fade) so I can finish my BAS?
I'll come & do your sanding... anything to get out of this bloody paperwork.

Ouch! I see... But it's not for my patience - I need to work quickly and efficiently, but for woodwork it is not good way.

In the unlikely event that anyone is wondering what might be happening here, the short answer is: nuffin'.

The long answer is that I am waiting for some new varnish to arrive and I am being really lazy and avoiding doing any sanding whatsoever. I seem to have developed a severe aversion to the latter .

Even five minute's worth or less of said activity gets me really riled up. Still.

While I have recanted my ideas about giving up the boat and/or getting out the axe, I am still really twitchy about the whole thing. A surface coating that takes over two months to become serviceable - if that - is really a bit much.

We'll see how the next batch of varnish behaves once it gets here (and I get the sanding done), won't that be fun, kiddies?

Get stuck into it & knock it over so when the new vanish arrives you can attack it straight away.

If you don't it will just sit there & fester.

OK. Just to recapitulate, and to remind people of what the boat looks like in case they've forgotten:

    1. Sanding the most recent Goldspar top-coat smooth, prior to putting on the next (four) coats...

This image can be found somewhere on my Flickr account

The photo also serves as a refresher course in Flickr uploading, since I haven't done anything for months. Today's sanding sessions could be said to have provided similar familiarisation with actually working on the boat. Have I already said that I am beginning to loathe sanding? I did a quarter of the foredeck, the starboard side-deck and both aft air-tank sides. That isn't very much - especially with all the nooks and crannies to come (shudder), but it's a start. The trick at the moment is not to look further ahead than the next square centimetre, otherwise I'm likely to rush screaming for the nearest exit. I've also got the mast and rudder-box and so forth to deal with (the latter right down past the resin to the wood) so I'll leave quacking about things right there.

    Hi Cliff,

See above, especially the comment about not looking farther ahead than a very small area ;). And yes, it has been festering away quite horribly. Thank you for your support :)))).

    Cheers,
    Alex.

Heh - very good. I particularly liked the idea of the five-part wet-sanding tutorial . Not sure why it needed five parts - perhaps I should watch them all when I switch to a machine that will allow me to watch YouTube videos (it's a javascript and/or Flash issue and it drives me fair up the wattle).

Actually, I really like the idea of using a spray bottle to apply the water (see Part One - that's in a comment under the video...). Wish I knew about that one earlier!

    Cheers,
    the alex.
