Default From Oz Racer RV to Oz Goose RV.

Hopefully I'm getting the names right.

I have the plans to the Oz Racer RV but want to build the Oz Goose RV (the stretch limo version).
    Hi Michael
I checked with the timber supplier and I can get Okume 4mm in 2500x1220 (8x4 ft.). The 5 and 6mm come in 3120x1530 (10x5 ft.) With the Eureka I used the 5mm big sheets and after a bit of head scratching I fit the bulk heads and the decks on the two sheets and finished up with two pieces 2440x300 left over. Would it work for the bottom of the goose if the off-cut was cut in half and then butt joined to each end? I don't know whether this has any value as I don't know what the rest of the second sheet is used for.
The supplier is going to try and track down some cheaper boat building ply. Is it possible to use normal building ply and seal it completely? I guess with ply boats it doesn't matter what kind of ply is used it still has to be completely sealed and for looks Okume is really beautiful.

    Cheers, Kev.

The most economical place to use the offcuts would be to extend one of the 10 ft sheets to do the bottom. But as the bottom needs to be 6mm, this is too difficult or too fussy.

If you find exterior ply with good internal veneers (look at the edges of the sheets before you buy) and two good faces then it is just as good as marine ply.

If I see 10 sheets of ply and can only see a total of two or four little core voids ... I would consider that good enough.

Exterior ply and marine ply (and aircraft ply) all use the same glue. But there are different specifications for faces, internal voids, allowable patches etc. But sometimes a factory will arbitrarily allow better quality sheets to be sold as cheaper ones. Usually they come off the same line anyhow. What is a factory to do if it orders cheaper veneers or logs to make exterior ply and nice ones arrive!?

They'll still sell it as exterior because they need to have that product in the marketplace.

    Hi Michal,

What I was thinking of was with the 6mm big sheets 3120x1530 (10x5) the off cut would be 3120x30 (10x1). If I cut this in half and then to length and using butt sraps glue one piece at either end.

My cheapest way out with ply is Okume. The guy I bought mine from for the Eureka did a search for alternatives with exterior/marine plys and found only one exterior ply cheaper than Okume. The supplier is in North Germany and transport costs put it right out of the question. Okume's fine by me. I think it looks great.

    Cheers, Kev.

Wow .. that's going to be one light Goose if you keep the other timber light too. Any timber that isn't going to be directly hit by objects external to the boat can be as light as possible.

So if you can get a cheap light timber you might break some hullweight records!

The most common light woods here are pine but the timber supply where I buy mine has really good quality. I have to buy machined pieces (no option) but it's fine and straight grained. It's what I used on the Eureka and I was happy with that.

I just recieved the side panel drawings for the Oz Goose or MkIII (don't know what the official name is). When Michael said he would extend the measurements from MkII to MkIII I had the impression that would mean the height of the side panels would increase a bit as well (don't know why). They don't, so when you compare the two plans the new plan is noticably larger even on paper. Longer and seemingly sleeker. The curve of the bottom of the hull is also not so acute as the former which adds to the effect.

I do have a question Michael. Do you think it's possible to fit all the panels on 4 sheets of standard (2440x1220) (8x4) 4mm ply. I've been having a bit of a play around with the measurements and I think it works.

Well I now know the official name is the Oz Goose RV.

    Thanks Michael.

    Cheers, Kev.

LIf you look at the plywood layout in the Ozracer RV plan and remember that the two sides the two tank faces will all be 1.5 sheets long, same with the bottom.. I can't see how it would work. Not that I'm looking super carefully.

The foredeck, side decks and bow transom would be bigger too as they all have a longitudinal component.

The 8ft boat does use 4 sheets with some offcuts. So I can't see that you could get the goose from 4.

Ahhhh but I have an ace up my sleeve.

Just joking. I still have the off cuts from the big sheets from the Eureka. I was working it out roughly today and I think I can just scrape in. I can use the 5mm Okume ply especialy for the side decks If not I'll just have to buy another sheet.

    Cheers, Kev.
