OzRacer in Melbourne - the banana boat
Another OzRacer build under way in Melbourne. This one is being done by two 9 year old girls, my daughter Ella and her friend Maxine. After a few sessions over Easter they are now gluing cleats to bulkheads and planing their hull sides to shape.
Photos are being added to this album:

Parental supervision is being limited to safety and scheduling, it is their project. The girls will be posting their progress as they go.

Another building session on Wednesday. It seems progress is limited by the number of clamps we have.
More pictures in the album

The girls are really enjoying these building sessions, They start with a hot Milo, cut some bits, glue them up then start playing with the tools and furniture. A 1 1/2 to 2 hour session seems to be about right.
So Girls, Why is it called the Banana boat and what is the all important colour scheme going to be?

They are doing really well!
The cordless drill is a great way to hugely reduce the need for clamps if you find yourselves running short.
Great effort!

I made a pile of clamps out of 4" dia, thick walled PVC pipe.
What great fun for you and the girls. My kids 11 & 16, at the time, built our Goat Island Skiff. It's only been a year but they still have fun talking about the build and sailing the boat they built. Keep going and have fun. Kids will be kids.......
The epoxy fight picture shows a epoxy glove fight between my daughter and son that cost me an extra few $$$. Not because of wasted epoxy, but getting all the cured epoxy cut out of daughter’s hair at the beauty shop.
The kids will come up with a great color. Our boat is lime green!!!
Have Fun and be patient. It's worth it.

Things do happen very quickly once you have the bits made up.
Also remember that it's a really good rundown on general boatbuilding and is transferable to other boat projects. In fact .. you will be able to improve on most plans that you will be able to see nicer and better ways to do things.
All good fun.

banana boat gone 3D
The girls have gone 3D!!!
They were getting a bit bored with measuring, cutting and gluing but they have now moved on to assembling.
On Wednesday they put together the sides, bulkhead and transoms, adjusted the fit of the corners and screwed it together. The 1/2 sheet of 4mm ply that has not been cut yet was used to check for squareness.
It is not glued yet but was seen as big progress. Tomorrow a visit to the chandler to get some paint and other boat bits.

For some reason the photos I have uploaded recently are reduced to a tiny size. Same camera, same pre-posting reduction ( 600x460 and less than 60Kb ). They look OK in the album but when you click on them they are thumbnail size. Have I gone over a number of picture limit or something else that is causing this?
