    Default GIS Buttstrap Question

I've just come to join the side panels of my GIS and have a question re the buttstrap length of 510mm that the plans quote. My side panels are 589mm deep at the join. The plans says the buttstrap should be placed 50mm in from the top and bottom edges. Does this mean the length of my buttstrap should actually be 489mm [589 - (50x2)] or have I made a mistake in lofting my sides?

All the lofting dimensions of the side panels were measured from the top of the ply sheets, and the shapes look correct.

My bulkheads and the transom are finished and I'm desperate to finish the side panels, ready for a dry run hull assembly. Can anyone clarify this for me please?

    Thanks, Gordon

    Howdy Gordon,

The height of the sides at that point is exactly 589.2mm, so you have done a very nice job!

So, yes, bring the buttstrap measurement down to about 489. That should leave plenty of space for the chine log and inwale.

    Best wishes
    Michael

Thanks for that timely tip! (I am about to glue up the side panels, too.)

And, thanks to Gordon for asking the question. I probably would have just centered the butt strap at about 40mm from each edge.

What a relief! Many thanks Michael for the reply and good luck with your side glueing Bob.

I'll post some pictures once I've done my dry run hull assembly

Crikey Bruce, I thought you were kidding until I checked my plans for the spar dimensions. I don't know about a sharp pencil - a new pair of specs might be on the cards as well!

I can't tell you how badly I've bitten my tongue on the "buttstrap" measurement. It must be an Aussie thing.

    Seems perfectly innocent to me.

While I was in the USA - you should have heard the guffaws when I asked in a couple of shops for a pair of thongs.

We do wear them to the beach and the straps are the same arrangement.

Yap ... I am very apologetic for it in the plans text though!

I think I can mark with a pencil to about a quarter millimetre - or certainly half ... I don't really expect you to go to the tenths!

I realised that it would have been the design software that was responsible for this so I forgave you and just rounded them up or down. When the result is faired, the thickness of a sharp pencil line is as exact as is needed.

By the way, Irwin make a great pencil sharpener for those soft oblong shaped pencils. It has a cam action to take care of the non-round shape. Saves whittling them away so quickly!

I'm running an after school boatbuilding group and I have been introducing all the fun words to them over the course: the typical bow/stem, stern/transom, port, starboard, etc, etc. The fun really started when we started into buttocks and futtocks, buttstraps and then there are the epoxy consistencies: peanut butter, mayonaisse, ketchup, etc.

They loved the futtocks and buttocks though. A few parents humorously brought up that it ended up as dinner conversation on several nightly occasions.

Who knew buttstraps could make a great thread.

    Flip flops
    Jandles (Jandals, maybe) (in NZ)

Do you want to go through the different names for the adjustable spanner?
