    I am rushing at the moment ... but just to whet appetites.

    PDRs at the Goolwa wooden boat show where the lug and sprit rigs were on the same stretch of water at the same time.

    Ok ... lug vs sprit

    Mike on the beach ... look at that sail shape. Is there enough sail Mike?


    Waiting for the start gun ... I sooo missed the start. Was really late trying to get clear wind and too far away from the line.


    Mike got a very nice start and may have been in the first one or two boats to the windward mark before he had to come back and pack up. You can see the pink boat (me) trying to catch up.

    And for those who wonder about the mast pressing against the sail ... the windward leg had the sail on the "disadvantageous side". In other words, no material difference.

    I took the pink PDR through the whole race ... confused my friends in the TS16 after I caught them on starboard on the last windward leg.

    The PDR had the legs of the balance lug rigged 16footer furthest out when going upwind ... the guy was a very good sailor - outfoxed everyone on the first downwind leg by heading high and coming down fast on a increase on windpressure. That was a boat of some historical significance too built as a tender to a major shipbuilding area in ... um maybe Melbourne.



    Mike coming in with his rudder in shallow mode. That buoy was attached to a long length of rope that went off to the left and was tied to the wharf. It made sailing out of this space pretty crap and in the stronger breeze of saturday it made it exciting coming into the area too.

    Thanks for the pics Mik.

    Is there enough sail, well yes just as well there are reef points for the stronger breezes. I think maybe it should be hoisted a bit lower on the mast it looks too high, plenty of head clearance for tacking though.
    Small admission I didn't make the sail it came from Duck Flat, looks great don't you think.

    Mik, wished I could have finished the race the PD seemed to point very well although the foot was a bit over tensioned and while the breeze was light the helm seemed well balanced.

    Now to get on and make the Code 0

    haha .. and don't forget the merchandising ... it buys pigs for a Buddhist run orphanage in Mongolia. Well .. what I mean is every cent of profit goes to the orphanage and it normally runs a bit short of covering the cost of the pig. So the Biting Midge coughs up the balance.

    What a great looking Duck that black one is. Then you top it off with a big balanced lug rig. Personally, I think we've goat a winner in the Swimsuit Competition I gotta say, I love my balanced lug rig - shown here sneaking up on a Core Sound 20. Sailed even beside him... until he got his rig sorted, then he was Gone!





    And - shown here at the World Championship race





    The only sail that LOOKS as interesting to me is Andyrew's orange batwing lug

    Hey David ..

    I think your halyard attachment point on the yard needs to go a bit further up/back. The boom is too low at the back end. But that sail is really making your boat go in the middle shot!

    In the windier shots .. it is much more comfy (and WAAAAY faster) to sit on the side decks! hehe

    Your BOAT, mate... your boat! I think you have the best looking PDR I've ever seen.
    Mercifully, I was able to shield my eyes from the glare of the white legs and concentrate on the gorgeous boat.

    You've got your bleedin' nerve. What the heck do you know about it. I mean... oh wait... you are, after all, the designer.

    So - if I slide the cowhitched block up/back on the yard, it'll raise the aft end of the boom? I suppose it would, if I kept the boom projection the same as it currently is. OK, will do.

    Now... as to sitting on the side decks. Despite your long-standing campaign to pry my ponderous fundament off the floorboats, up onto the gunwale, this time I have an excuse. There are no side decks! As you may recall - I built a traditional Shorty-style PDR - back before the OZ version was even a twinkle in your mischievous eye. It wasn't until I finished it off years later, that I decided to go with your balanced lug rig for the little cutie.

    BTW - In that first shot, I was still in the wind-shadow of a peninsula off to port, but about to hit the 20 - 25 mph winds further out. When I did, she handled just fine with me merely shifting side-to-side. Now... if I'd been seriously trying to race someone - rather than just seeing if she'd survive those conditions (she was gorgeous, except for trashing a leeboard) - I might have been tempted to handle the sheet a bit more aggressively, and perch my posterior on the edge. If I get the aft end of the boom up a bit, that'll be even more tempting. That is - after all - my best hat (and my second-best head). However... there's still that lingering problem. I'd probably have to set my beer down

    Just chiming in with my 2 cents worth, for what it's worth (as you will no doubt see shortly...).

    I'm going for the lug-rig first off - because I painted myself into a corner! SOMEONE mis-ordered a whole stack of Paulownia to the dimensions for the mast staves, in a blind moment in very hot (46+ degC) conditions. After a panicked email to MIK, we agreed that trying the Paulownia out on the lug mast would be a useful experiment - as long as I glassed the mast and lengthened the bottom core piece a(n unspecified) bit.

    I will also be making the sprit rig, but at a later date when I can afford the timber (I just blew that part of the budget on a new - and very good - sander). Interestingly, after a bit of playing about with the sail cutting diagrams, I found that I could squeeze a lug sail out of the sprit sheet. Not that it necessarily matters, as they cost the same. You can't make two sails out of the one, sadly (just kidding ;). Although at the time it did matter, as DF had run out of lug cuts, and I thought I was going to be on the water much sooner than has transpired, comme toujours. I believe that DF have new stock in, but in any case, given the, um, "meteoric" progress of my build, it's not going to matter.

    I must say I love the lug rig's looks on the Duck (those are some fantastic shots above, and as for Mike's sexy black racer(tm), well, my thoughts on that beast-ette were noted elsewhere, once I'd wiped the drool off my keyboard). It turns the Duck into a wannabee Goat :). If you screw up your eyes. From a distance...
