Default Price of a OZ PDR

    Hi Guys.

Just wondering what a reasonable price would be for a fully completed oz PDR.

    Cheers.

    Nick,

I'm afraid the question, as it stands, is too vague.

Are you wondering what it would cost to build one yourself?

Are you considering commissioning someone to build you one?

Do you have one you want to put on the market?

    Or...?

    Cheers,

    Talking

Hi > sorry guys, I should have been a bit more specific.

I want to sell my PDR, its basically just hatched, only been on the water twice...

It's built to the OZ Plans with the outboard motor mount mod... I used 4mm Okume for the sides and 6mm for the bottom. I used Boatcote epoxy for all the sealing and gluing with high strength filler. Outside has 3 coats of yellow epoxy enamel and inside is bright in marine spar. Has all double braidd, and Ronstan fittings. Sail is a off white 140gsm tarp (sprit rig), with extra tarp for making the Lug as well, from DFWB.

It is 100% complete and ready to sail.

I'd be happy with $1500, is that reasonable? If there is a local demand, I may build others to order...

    Thanks!
    Nick

    Nick,

In your situation, it's whatever the market will bear.

I have no clue about the market for used, small, home-built, quirky sailboats in your part of the world. My first impression is that you'd be lucky to get the $1,500. Working at production pace, in a professional shop, I can build a basic PDR in one week. That's Zero to Sailing. Materials costs would probably run $400 - 600. So... if someone commissioned me to build them a PDR, I'd probably charge about $2,000. Of course, that figure could vary, depending upon the specifications.

The rule of thumb I always think of for home-built boats is that you can probably get your materials costs back. The exception seems to be if a boat has a particular following. For example - if you live in New England, and can do a good job on a Haven 12-1/2, you might sell it for a profit.

Gut feel is that David is on the money. Amateur boat-building labour is generally unrewarded.
Exception might be if you can sell on consignment through someone like the Duckery.
Or the boat has a particular aesthetic appeal - an Oughtred, Herreshof or Joel White design.
    cheers

I think that is a reasonable price. Not many near new sailboats are available for that type of money.

The problems with boats is either they sell or don't sell - you really need the right person to walk in the door. But I think the price looks OK.

If you monster me and send me pics I will put it on a boats for sale page on my website ... I have been meaning to do this for some time as the Red Goat that was at the woodwork show is for sale too.
