OK, more pics.
Day 4 saw the new bandsaw & the new belt/disk sander unpacked & set up to do the seats, thwart, & decks... I would still be there trying to fit those seats without them... at one point & suggested changing the plans to use ready made plastic seats. (see the pics 114 & 115. )
We also got to use Rocker's tablesaw (now mine) to put kerfs in the underside of the deck & to eat dinner off.
I made a focaccia & a pizza for dinner & I think I now have a permanent resident boatbuilder.
Sometime around about 11:45 on Tuesday night saw the last piece clamped in.Cliff.
If you find a post of mine that is missing a pic that you'd like to see, let me know & I'll see if I can find a copy.

Day 5 saw LOTS of sanding & the clamps removed.
The boat was finished & just waiting for paint & varnish by 1:46pm on day 5.
The inside has tinned epoxy timber preservative & varnish on it, the outside has paving paint on it. The decks will be done in black enamel.
The thwart is a piece of Huon that PJ bought up from Tassie.
Pic 139 shows one of the knots that didn't break, they are very pretty, just weak & a pain to work with.
The last two pics are the same, just with & without flash to show up the colour & the grain in the timber inside the boat.Cliff.

wooohooo ... looks very nice. Lots of nice little details. Bullnosing at the ends of the gunwales, the general attention to detail ... very nice.
What did you think about using the 4mm? I was worried it would be a bit floppy with the large panel sizes of this boat. Did the taping work OK with the thinner ply? Was it OK handling the boat to flip it over etc?

Well, it's midday Thursday and we're at the really exciting part - sitting around watching and waiting (patiently) for paint to dry. The weather has been kind to us with good dry air and a bit of a breeze so it all looks good as far as making a splash in the lake tomorrow afternoon.
Paddles are under glue at the moment and will be ready to be attacked by Cliff's BROKEN low-angle block plane, a spokeshave that gives blisters, a rasp (only just found) and some 60grit sandpaper - whatever works best. I'll have to post a picture of the broken blade in the plane - It's been like this since the gunwales went on. And I don't understand WHY it's still working.
Cliff has promised Pizza again tonight, so I'd best get back to work (call this work???)"....we also have a line of very nice umbrellas..."

Hi Mik, The ply we used was Gaboon, 4mm all over with a couple of 2mm strengthening panels in the floor to make Cliff feel a little more comfortable. All up weight is 28kg which I'm pretty happy with.
The 4mm didn't pose any problems for us in set-up and the taping system works a treat. The hull came up and matched the skegs perfectly as cut to your measurements. As Cliff said, we glued in the skeg doublers before putting in ther fillets. I did that because I wanted screws right at the stems and reasoned that it couldn't be any weaker being under the fillet. At the end of the day I don't think it made any difference and it would have been a neater job to place them afterwards."....we also have a line of very nice umbrellas..."

Gaboon is pretty flash for the Quick Canoe, but light weight is always nice!
So, Peter, why is a Taswegian in the Far North of Queensland? Just a winter thing?

PJ is actually a FNQer now living in Tassie but he wouldn't miss the Tinaroo Raid for anything.
He also has family in Cairns so it is a chance to catch up with them as well.Cliff.

The boat is finished & we have had a beer while we watched the paint dry.
PJ is taking more photos.
It only has 2 coats of paint on the outside because a litre of paving paint is not enough to do 3 coats starting with bare ply on this tub.
I'll do another coat next week.
A litre of varnish was more than enough for 2 coats inside because it was sealed with the wood preserver first.
Tomorrow it goes onto the top of a car & then off to Tinaroo, we probley won't launch it til Saturday.
I am very happy with the result.Cliff.

Day 6...
I spent most of it back on the bloody renos.
PJ was busy in the shed.... dicking around with the camera & making paddels waiting for the paint to dry.
In amongst the photos of the mess on the floor, bench, veranda, the broken block plane etc, you will see some pics of what we used on the boat & there are some pics of the oars he knocked up &,&,& you will also find some pics of the finished boat.Cliff.
