It tracks really well, and the stability is amazing. You can dip a gunwale in the water and it still doesn't feel like it's going all the way over. It doesn't turn too sharp, but I can most likely fix that by giving the keel some rocker by planing down the skegs. Or I could just leave it and enjoy it on more open water where it will track without too much paddle correction. You can't seem to have it both ways, so some experimenting is in order.

[QUOTE=pdr311;1088769 Fiber drywall tape is available at any home improvement store, and is really inexpensive. Maybe try some with your other destructive tests and you may be impressed.
Rick.[/QUOTE]
The drywall tape I have seen only has a few threads in it compared to a normal glass tape. The strength will be in proportion with the amount of glass in comparison.
The normal 2" glass tape - usually 4 or 6oz has been found to be very compatible with plywood strengths, so that's what any alternative needs ot be compared with.

Wow ... those pics appeared while I was posting the other one above ... AMAZING!
Particularly the stability. How was it one up sitting in the end of the boat ... Rick and I were discussing the relative fine-ness of the ends.
Stability can be a double edges sword though as if a boat is too stable it follows the surface of the water closely including when waves are coming from the side - so it can lurch around
We have a lit of criteria.
That it floats
Is stable enough - this was one of my worry points, but looks like it would make a good fishing canoe - was the standing up fairly secure?
Paddles OK - test are makes reasonable progress for all the extra wetted surface.
Rought water and wind - and that the flat bottom doesn't spit and bounce too much and the boat tracks OK.
The keel is much deeper than I guessed it needed to be at this stage, but Rick is ready to do some tuning with a plane when it gets out on some more open water for a comparison.
Looks like it need a tiny sheer correction from the designer in the last coupla feet, just a little wobble.
RICK .... bl00dy fantastic effort.

Standing up was no problem at all. This is where I was able to test that you could dip a gunwale in the water without it feeling like it was going to skip up from under me. The girls found it more stable than the other canoes we have, and were cruising around the creek picking up the dog's balls and toys that had floated off. This meant a bunch of reaching over and out. Usually that is not a strength of a canoe, yet the girls had no issues doing that at all. All three of us went out for a spin, and it hardly settled in the water at all compared with two people. Sitting in the end of the canoe was not tippy at all unless only one person was sitting there, but that is not the way to paddle solo with no gear aboard.

The stability means no fear for putting the seats up high in a good paddling position.

One nice thing - it can be tarted up into a fairly pretty beast. Correct the wobble in the sheerline. Change the one simple thwart for one a bit more shaped/shapely. Caned - or other nice - seats. Varnish the interior. Nice paint job. Painted sheerstripe.
Just as she sits, I'd say congratulations are in order... esp. for Mik and his creative brainstorm. With that skeg added to that hullshape... I cant help but think of it as the Fast Motor Sailor of canoes. Of course, a more substantial body of usage will tell a fuller tale, but everything sounds quite good initially!

What? You didn't like my 45 minute paint job? Which brought the entire build to 5 hours and 10 minutes? I have spent 5 hours shaping a thwart, and 10 hours caning seats on other canoes. It would have been a tragedy to make the build quick and 'disposable', then spend long hours making a silk purse out of a sow's ear.

Totally agree. I was simply noting that this quick and simple design - which you've done an admirable job with - nonetheless strikes me as also lending itself to going another direction. She would make a perfectly lovely Goldplater That speaks to the elegance of form and the Righness of the lines.

No offense taken. The entire tenor of the idea, was to have something that looked and worked like a canoe, but could be built in a day or so, then used on a trip and given away at the end of it. A sort of improvement on renting a plastic canoe, and having to figure out how to get it back to the head of the river after a weeks excursion. MIK asked me to build it quick and light. I am more than capable of building a 'goldplater', but quick and dirty was the order of the day.

Wobble in the sheer?
I don't see it. Is this a case of the Emperor's new clothes or what?

I have fiddle with the pics a bit to bring the colour out right .. not too bad at all.
Some of the pics really have the effect I was trying to get at.
This was the Alpha Program in computer parlance.
Now for the Beta Testing program while Rick waits for reasonable conditions to take the boat out in a bit more wind and more open water. Don't want to go out at the wrong time in the wrong place in a Canadian winter.
One of the PDR people is Paul Helbert - he is the one that brought a boat along for me to sail in the worlds in Georgia.
Anyway, he is also a serious canoe person like Rick, but his son Eli went to the last Olympics as a reserve (I think he was a reserve) and also coaches whitewater and other techniques.
So looking at a narrower solo boat to reduce the various drags - which will work out because of the huge stability. Paul said less length doesn't really make sense so will just tweak the existing one into a sleeker machine.
The bottom batten will be reduced but the end skegs left big so that Paul can lop them down later to get the balance between steering and directional stability that he wants.
This photo shows the wobble at the bow in the far side of the boat but a VERY satisfactory looking boat for the effort.
I can see the ghost of the eureka even more now!
