    Default Quick Canoe epoxy question

    Hi,

I'm in the middle building a quick canoe. So far everything is going reasonably well for a first-time boat builder, but there is one detail that has me a little puzzled - whether or not to epoxy the gunwales/inwales and the ply edge at the top of the sheer.

The plans have you go to some trouble to avoid getting epoxy on the gunwales - you cover them with masking tape when epoxying the hull. The plans also warn against the temptation of using extra epoxy where its not in the design. Nowhere do they say "epoxy the gunwales!".

But the gunwales and inwales and especially the top edge of the ply look to me like they should be epoxied. I want to epoxy them.

    What to do?

    Hi Andrew, and welcome!

The gunwale and inwale get glued on and then planed (preferably) or sanded down to match the ply height.

Once it is finished you can decide to epoxy seal the top edge or not.

If you are fully coating the boat with epoxy then this area will be coated as well.

If planning to mostly paint or varnish then there is little harm in epoxying this area. It will make it easier to fill the grain much faster than paint or varnish can do it.

The epoxy saves some labour as you can put the epoxy on wet on wet and get the grain filled in one process over a few hours. Compared to days of recoating with paint or varnish (as I found with my Quick Canoe - I had quite forgotten how long it takes to fill wood grain with paint or varnish.
