Default Red Goat launched, Cumbria UK.

Just got some pics and a note from David Betka.

    He writes

    Greetings from Cumbria, UK

It is some time (early 2007) since I bought the plans for the G.I.S. but I finally managed to get her launched in September 2008. The boat is very easy to handle and is surprisingly responsive in light winds.

The launch took place on Derwentwater in the Lake District where multi-directional winds are the norm rather than the exception, which makes it all very interesting. I have attached some pics for your interest.

    Regards

    Dave
The pic of it floating by the beach is a great one ... looks VERY modern.

So that is three GIS's launched in the UK this year. Cool!

One red one and a two white ones. The other two are in Essex and Norfolk.

That looks really sharp! Makes the Wayfarer behind it look very staid.

Hey Chris .... if it makes the Wayfarer look staid ... what does it do to the Toppers!!!

Actually ... both Wayfarers and Toppers are excellent boats. The Wayfarer was set up to be a real cruising dinghy and the Topper an indestructible boat for learners (which actually sails quite well too providing the crew is not tooo heavy).

But with the Toppers I am reminded of a two line review for a car.

When I was 12, just before I walked out of a rented house on the waterfront one spring morning to see 100 sails flapping in the breeze for the first time, I was a car enthusiast.

I used to get all the car magazines. Anyway a few years later CAR magazine had an annual set of two line reviews for most cars being manufactured. I remember two of them.

    Citroen GS
LIkes - corners like a cat on carpet.
    Dislikes - nothing really.

(Mum had one ... they were right. Dad had the bigger DS - the weird curvy one. I think dad got it because it was manufactured by a socialist country AND the design was then about 28 years old AND the headlights used to look around corners. Obviously I thought it was cool too.)

But the one that the Topper made me think of (very unfairly mind you) was this

    MG-B
    Likes - Lasts forever
    Dislikes - That's the problem.

Best wishes (and no offence to Toppers!!!)

Oh don't get me started on Citroens, I am a HUGE fan! I sat in a C6 the other day - which was a mistake. Some day it will be mine! (after the usual savage depreciation they always suffer here). My Xantia was by far the best car I have ever owned.

Toppers have some quite nice bits on them (rudder/tiller, mast step) and the injection moulded hull is very interesting but very rarely do they seem to really get up and go. They just feel permanently mushy.

The GIS sitting by the bank in that photo looks so poised and potent. Nice in red too.

I know that this is Derwentwater, not Coniston or Windemere, but GIS looks very Swallows and Amazons in that setting. Probably the standing lug sail
    Cheers

Nice, damn nice! I thought with all the freeboard that the Goat wouldn't look great with red. I am beginning to think the boat looks great with any color!

    Nice work!

Beautiful! Absolutely beautiful. Congratulations, David, on the successful launch of your very pretty boat.

Clint is right. The GIS looks great in all colors.

When I read the title of this thread I fully expected w-red would be w-rong.

Instead, I think it is positively stunning. Almost makes me wish I hadn't already bought the white for mine.
