Seacoast Goat Sighting
I was out on Star Island (part of the Isles of Shoals, which is about 10 miles off the coast of New Hampshire, for those who don't live in the area) and I happened to be outside to see a beautiful dinghy coming into the harbor under full sail. I kept my eye on it as it got closer, and it began to look suspiciously like a GIS with its distinctive sail plan and lines. It landed on Smuttynose Island and later I rowed over to get a closer look at it. Sure enough, it was a Goat, sailed by fellow builder Christophe, well-known for the awesome GIS Amateur blog. We compared notes about our Goat Island Skiffs and I got a few pictures of his incredible boat as he set out for home. Apparently, there still haven't been any actual GIS meetups, so to Christophe and anyone in the Seacoast area who's interested, lets see if we can get some Goats sailing together before the end of the summer.

Christophe managed to sail off without hitting any rocks?

He rowed well out past the rocks before he raised the sail...

Will, what boat did you row to meet Christophe? That could count as a gathering...
One day in the future [cue sci-fi sound effects] my GIS will spend part of it's time in Lake St. Catherine Vermont. That's close enough to New Hampshire to warrant a gathering of some sort. But first I have to build it. Your Flickr collection is very thorough and helpful and might make the future [sci-fi music again...] a reality!Dave

Hard to believe there hasn't been a true meetup yet. But it's only a matter of time. We already have at least one completed boat each in New York and Connecticut and two in New Hampshire. When Dave, Clint, and I all finish ours, that will make at least 7 within a few hundred miles of each other. We'll have to run into each other sooner or later.

Well, hey... I'm not in New Hampshire, Connecticut or Vermont but I went to school in Connecticut (a very long time ago) so perhaps my California-built Michigan-based Goat could venture east for a meet up. (Depends entirely on timing - as most things do.)

Dave, the boat that I rowed over in was just an ordinary wooden rowboat borrowed from Star Island, not a GIS, so I don't think it counted for much of a meeting. Also, I'm glad my pictures on Flickr have been helpful, and once you get into the construction of the boat, feel free to let me know if you need any more detailed pictures for reference. And make sure to post some pictures of your own, it's always exciting to see a boat as beautiful as a Goat Island Skiff come together.

I didn't hit any rocks! I did, however, manage to lose the wind, get caught on the wrong side of the current, and it all ended up taking me four damnable hours to get back to Rye Harbor. Exhausting.
Dave, Lake Champlain is quite convenient for me, more so than St Catherine (I can't get theyah from heyah), it's large, and it has a water trail as well! Lake Champlain is good for people in the west too, such as Toronto...
Thank you for the pics Will! Hope to see you soon!
