Hello All,
Glad to see this thread talking about boats again.
I am in the fortunate position that my girlfriend fully supports my boat building hobby, including the occasional part or piece of timber lying in the midst of the living room for months on end. But then again, I support her in whatever she is pursuing in her work, sports and hobbies.
If rounded over nicely, the gunwales of the GIS are not too bad at all.
I really like the way the GIS is constructed: well thought out, very light, good ergonomics, easy to build, exiting to sail, decent rower. As I have mentioned multiple times to MIK: the GIS is a winning concept and I am quite sure that a smaller 12 ft boot inspired by this concept will become a success (looking at the responses on this forum, there seems to be a fair bit of interest already!).
I had not seen the last study for a while and must admit that it is growing on me...
Best wishes,
Joost

Hi Tim
I can confirm what Mik and Joost have said, the side rail isn't bad at all for hiking. I just use the sailing shorts with the removable padding and they work just fine.
We had an around the Lake race last weekend with three upwind legs of over 1km in 15 kt conditions, so I was hiking on the rail for a fair length of time, and no problems.
As Mik said, seat/tank structure comes at the cost of weight, extra materials, build complication and of course cost. Personally I'd rather have a lighter, quicker, cheaper boat that can be put on the water sooner

It won't be long before somebody tries it to be the first. It has plenty of sail area, so it would shift once it is up.
There was a kid who foiled his Sabre a little while ago. He didn't foil the rudder so it had a really bad attitude, but he managed to lift the hull alright.
Is that enough of a challenge for you?

Makes my humble Pirogue seem like a battleship lol its 17 ft long using 9mm botton and 6mm sides.12mmquarter decks, and hardwood thwarts. It weighs 50Kg's.Then i look at my old Binks FD all 3mm ply.LOL
I'm with you on using thinner ply.Lifting 50Kg onto my racks is not fun
