A different sort of RAID or Texas200 type distance event for all types of boats.
Howdy.
Remember we were talking about having an event like the TEXAS 200 and had problems finding an equivalent waterway with 200 miles sheltered from the worst of the sea, where the water was warm and there was a good chance of walking home if the boat discombobulated.
Well in the latest Podcast, Chuck comes up with an alternative scheme for a RAID or distance event.
The idea is like the gliding event of distance within a prescribed area.
So it is not necessary to have a 200 miles stretch at all - just a mix of waterways in a particular area. Down at Goolwa, the lakes and the Coorong in South Australia would work.
The idea is that there are checkpoints that you can go to in any order defined as GPS co-ordinates. Getting to a checkpoint is by an honesty system (in the beginning) or using a SPOT electronic device to put a spot on an internet map when you press the button - which Chuck has the software being written for.
The different checkpoints might have different values - or particular routes get different values.
In the USA the SPOT handhelds are less than $100.
Maybe the Myall lakes or Broken Bay, Brisbane Waters, Hawkesbury and Pittwater could work in NSW.
Moreton Bay in Queensland.
There is a disadvantage in some of the social side would be reduced, unless people organise to meet up.
It does allow a wider range of vessel types.
It avoids some of the trailering and dropping out logistics of a one way event.

Funny you should mention this Mik
I have been mulling over a similar sort of scheme since I laid eyes on Coffin Bay.
coffin bay sa - Google Maps
One day for each of Kellide & Mt Dutton Bays, and a couple for the western part
of the bay, possibly venturing out into open water near Farm Beach, weather
permitting. Distances are such that PDRs would have no trouble except in light air.
Stay at the caravan park, which is across the road from the small-boat ramp.
Coffin Bay pub, sailing & golf clubs do great cheap meals on different nights.
If you looked at the google maps link but have never visited Coffins... yes, the sand
is that impossibly white, and the water is that impossibly clear. There's even a fresh
water spring under the water at one place on the western part of the bay. Locals say
it is quite common to see wildlife standing in 18in of water in the saltwater bay, heads
fully under water, drinking from the spring.
Too much on my plate ATM to do anything about it though.
cheers

Howdy,
I think for a day or weekend "orienteering on the water" it would be good fun, but the area is quite small for a bigger scale event.
Not that a smaller scale event is without merit!!! Fits inside people's schedules, needs much less self sufficiency etc.

You could throw Lake Cootharabra near Noosa in to the mix of potential spots as well. Good for Biting Midge and I

Yes .... again for a one day event. The Texas event has the idea for about 200 miles to be the target for some of the boats. 300km. You would get pretty dizzy on Lake C. if it was a longer event. But for a shorter event it could be a great deal of fun.

Hi Duncan,
I will be up at Midge's (Mooloolaba) around the end of Jan. Would be great to catch up. I might have a word about another sailing soiree like last time.

The Broken Bay area is about 30km x 30km. The downside is that there are very few places to land if you want to camp or have a rest in the western parts. North and South parts are fine
Moreton bay in general - 75 x 30km with that lovely fiddly bit down south .. which could work on its own - Southern Moreton Bay about 25km x 7km and very complicated with lots of potential routes.
The Murray lakes and Coorong - there are a number of weirs, some of which can be opened, could potentially be about 70km x 70km. The lake can be a killer when it is full size in the wrong weather - I have no idea what it is like now.
Just so people can see.

I had always hoped that a low key Solent Raid might take place one day. Now it seems there will be one in 2010 starting late July. Organised by a couple of local chaps, it will start from Keyhaven and take in the local small harbours of Yarmouth, Newtown, Beaulieu, Cowes and Ashlett Creek.
This kind of low key local organised and supported event could also become the norm.
I think I prefer sailing along in group, as our potters do, rather than in all direction as an orienteering event does. Just a personal preference.

I agree completely with the preference. Even Chuck, who thought it up, still will have the very much one way Texas200 event with this one at another part of the year.
I like the way it might even up the playing field between different types of boats - sail, row, canoe, kayak. All can make tactical decisions to take best advantage of their boat's performance.
But Australia has quite an exposed shoreline in many ways so this becomes a way of being able to hold a bigger event in smaller areas.
Best wishes

Howdy, if you move back a little then Port STephens has quite a few nice inlets to spice things up a bit. This include the rather nice Karuah River.
Port Stephens - Google Maps
If some high value points were up in the inlets or up the various rivers it would work really well.

How about this:
Meet and greet and launch from Taylors Beach, navigate through Lemon Tree Passage, around Soldiers Point for a BBQ, then across the Bay to Winda Woppa, Hawkes Nest and camp o/night at Tea Gardens. Then up the Myall River to Tamboy and camp at Mungo Brush on the Myall Lakes. Then back again???
OR
For a more circular route, just north of Port Stephens are the lovely Myall Lakes which would be perfect because you can plot any sort of course around the Lakes and its complex shoreline to end up back where you started, which is a big plus.
