Default Storer Boat Photos - Launchings and others

    Howdy all,

A new section - prompted by this rather gorgeous pic.

Just renamed this to be the main collection point for all boat pics for launchings and general skiting ... "ain't it beautiful" type shots!

This one was sent to me by Chuck at Duckworks. He sold the plan - I get the pic.

A lovely boat being built by Olivier Chamel in Florida.

Some lovely workmanship and detail work on display. Not sure about the knots in the gunwale timber but the chinese think that the perfect work of art always has just one defect!

Just a comment on a question that people ask. Before all the gear goes in and makes things confusing on the boat can you see the buttstraps? On the side and on the floor.

Buttstraps make the panel joins very neat and very even. Most scarfs result in an ugly wavering glue join down the side of the boat.

Thanks Olivier - looking forward to seeing it on the water.

Very interesting about the butt strapps, Mik. That is a handsome boat and a very clean job.

Here is a Q: do you find that white works well for the boat and clear finished inside? Seems to work especially well...are there other combos that seems to work well together?

    Howdy,

I haven't got a lot of colour advice for you - but white does look very classicy - which seems to suit the Goat.

There have been a Red one and a Dark Green one. The dark green doesn't look so good looking from a distance away, but when you get closer it REALLY shows off the timberwork.

The biggest thing I have learned with boats is that a varnished interior always looks better than any alternative. The varnish means that there is so much visual chaos on the inside with the wood grain that it is much harder to see lumps and bumps.

You could always paint the outside of the hull the same as the PDRacer being built in the Philippines shown in the other thread!

I hadn't made that connection before about the varnish in the visual chaos of the interior. Interesting point!

Has anyone done bottom paint...we do some of our skiffs and dories at Compass Project with bottom paint..some boats look great with bottom paint and others don't, something I have found interesting over the years.

    Default New Boat Pics

    Hello:

I ordered plans 4 weeks ago and just put together the sides and bulkheads. Thanks you, Michael, for designing such a simple boat to build. Here are a few pictures. I hope to complete the boat in 6-8 weeks, before the end of the Summer here in Maine.

    Cheers,

This Eureka was launched by Alan Drew.

I think I need to find out what stains or whatever he used ... nice to see a different approach come off so nicely!!!!

Michael, (Sent a e-mail ages ago but I think I mucked it up)
Just a thank-you note for your support during the construction stages of my canoe.
I have attached a couple of photo's for your interest-hope you like what I did, I'm really happy with the end result and the maiden voyage went really well.

    Regards
    Alan Drew

    Hi Richard,

The boat looks great!!!! Be more brutal with the downhaul to reduce sail twist and it will go even better!

What a great stretch of water!

good to seethat a GIS is sailing in the UK.

Alec Jordan of Jordan Boats http://www.jordanboats.co.uk/JB/index.htm who cuts ply kits for a number of designs has also shipped his first Goat kit.

Alec also started up a home boat builders group called the UK-HBBR who meet up regularly in the UK. Their May 2008 meet was at Barton Broad in fact - terrible weather though. Next meet is planned for the Cotswolds in Sept.

Here is the site for any UK readers http://ukhbbr.wordpress.com/ and on the front page you will also see a link to the Yahoo Group where ideas and help is swapped. Be good to have a GIS builder on board. Brian.
