Very interesting about the butt strapps, Mik. That is a handsome boat and a very clean job.

Here is a Q: do you find that white works well for the boat and clear finished inside? Seems to work especially well...are there other combos that seems to work well together?

I haven't got a lot of colour advice for you - but white does look very classicy - which seems to suit the Goat.

There have been a Red one and a Dark Green one. The dark green doesn't look so good looking from a distance away, but when you get closer it REALLY shows off the timberwork.

The biggest thing I have learned with boats is that a varnished interior always looks better than any alternative. The varnish means that there is so much visual chaos on the inside with the wood grain that it is much harder to see lumps and bumps.

You could always paint the outside of the hull the same as the PDRacer being built in the Philippines shown in the other thread!

I hadn't made that connection before about the varnish in the visual chaos of the interior. Interesting point!

Has anyone done bottom paint...we do some of our skiffs and dories at Compass Project with bottom paint..some boats look great with bottom paint and others don't, something I have found interesting over the years.

I ordered plans 4 weeks ago and just put together the sides and bulkheads. Thanks you, Michael, for designing such a simple boat to build. Here are a few pictures. I hope to complete the boat in 6-8 weeks, before the end of the Summer here in Maine.

The boat looks great!!!! Be more brutal with the downhaul to reduce sail twist and it will go even better!

good to seethat a GIS is sailing in the UK.

Alec Jordan of Jordan Boats http://www.jordanboats.co.uk/JB/index.htm who cuts ply kits for a number of designs has also shipped his first Goat kit.

Alec also started up a home boat builders group called the UK-HBBR who meet up regularly in the UK. Their May 2008 meet was at Barton Broad in fact - terrible weather though. Next meet is planned for the Cotswolds in Sept.
