I've taken the boat out now three times with the block on the yard down about eight inches from the center of the yard. This raises the boom about a foot higher above the rail. It is high enough now to easily swing over the head of a child.

The sailing was good. Two times the wind was very light. The boat is just amazing in light stuff. The wind was almost imperceptible. But we still made steady progress. My son came out and practiced watching his head (even though he didn't need to except when I raised and lowered the sails).

The third sail was great. I was solo and the wind was force 3 - 4. I probably should have reefed the sail. I didn't notice any difference in handling with the sail raised a bit. For me having the sail higher is something I'm going to keep trying.

Any tips on reefing? I noticed some comments about using the batten somehow? Reefing this boat on the water seems like a really bad idea. But dropping the sail and rowing to shore is very easy. I'd just like some advice on what to do. I have the standard duckworks sail (which does have the curved foot thankfully!)

    Howdy,

In stronger winds the way you have set up the rig might cause you some problems with the sail handling in an unpredictable way - just keep an eye out for it ... it might tend to Chinese Gybe, but glad it is working in the moderate winds so far.

With reefing ... don't worry about the battens. I thought they were important when I did my initial writing about BETH, but have reviewed that position completely. You don't need to consider them at all. If they are there, no probs, if not there, also no probs.

ie OUT to either the holes in the ends of the boom (probably not big enough) or tie through the normal tack and clew position of the unreefed sail.

Important thing with reefing is that you need to use the same corner lashing method as the permanent lashings ... that you need to tie OUT to those points but also drop a couple of loops around the boom itself so the eye cannot lift off the surface of the boom.

Also as Woodeneye has found out, if the water is anything but smooth don't overtension the foot of the sail but allow some depth to remain, it helps windward performance.

    MIK
