    Default Eureka built costs

An interesting thread on Songofthepaddle on canoe build costs. Honest totals seem to be coming out about double first estimates, but still considered more than good value.

How are you guys finding the costs for Eureka? Or is it best not to check?

    Hi Brian,
I have decided it best not to go to print with detailed boat building costings just in case the chancellor of the exchequer happens on the evidence. The same for invoices that must never be left lying around, they are burnt immediately upon purchase.

I think it is safe to say what ever the estimates are, they are exactly that, as things like material quality and many other variables come into it.

However apart from the ply and epoxy most other materials can be scavenged, salvaged or made, the disposables I don't count because I would be making stuff anyway.
An old sailing mate dropped in to work today, haven't caught up with him for 5 or so years. We got talking boats and it turns out he is 7 years into a Eun un Mara build ( OK he admits he is a slow coach) anyway he commented that apart from ply and pox all other materials he has picked up from demolitions sites mainly Douglas Fir and Jarrah.

I estimate my Eureka will be about A$250, now double that add $100 then devide by .75.......Shhhhhhhh.

    Howdy,

There was a Eureka built on Song of the Paddle in the UK. You could contact the chap involved. I am pretty sure he was trying to build it on the cheap side.

There is also a thread here that gives a specific price for a very cheaply built Eureka. This very much represents the bottom end, but the boat looks cool.

Duckflat has the full materials for the hull listed at around $750. This doesn't include paint, varnish, sandpaper and most of the consumables (I think it does include epoxy applicators), includes epoxy and glass tape, timber is cut to cross section but ply is just sheets.

Might be a bit more now, I have not checked for a while.

    Michael
