    Default Need a Lift?

An American visiting in England asked at the hotel for the elevator.

The portiere (doorman) looked a bit confused but smiled when he
    realized what the man wanted.

"You must mean the lift," he said.

"No," the American responded. "If I ask for the elevator I mean the
    elevator."

"Well," the portiere answered, "over here we call them lifts".

"Now you listen", the American said rather irritated, "someone in
    America invented the elevator."

"Oh, right you are sir," the portiere said in a polite tone, "but
someone here in England invented the language".

The "portiere" was named after a Frenchman? Nor would he appear to have been a student of linguistics or history as he would then know the English did not "invent" the English language.

    Not true,
Archimedes built his first elevator probably in 236 BC.
And with regards to the language, the English did "DEFINE" it with the first dictionary of it.
Its just septics that have trouble with spelling so they change it.
Can't photocopy, they have to xerox.
But then Poms don't vacuum, they hoover.

Do Aussies have any brand names used for generic things??
Does anyone sikaflex instead of glue?

Like it Rogera!.......speaking as a fossilised redneck after over 40 years residence in Alice....and never ,ever ,ever ,ever missing an episode of the greatest British factually correct T.V. documentary series....called Fawlty Towers.........enables me to say The Hun has something......and as my poor wife of some 44 years duration was born in Munchuen....which together with London etc we have visited numerous times........(now that we have retired here to K.I. near Adelaide)......let me tell you clearly that as I am now completely surrounded by People Of Majestic Superiority.....all of whom escaped from the U.K.......enables me to simply repeat.......as Manuell always said........"I ..know ....nothing"!
Your joke is dead true......almost..........more please!!!!!!!
