Milk deivery in days gone by
I am sure some of us remember the home milk delivery............
Home milk delivery in the 1940s and '50s
Home milk delivery was once a regular service that the ' older brigade’ will no doubt recall. The milkman often carried eggs & other items.
Here is a collection of notes left by householders in milk bottles by the front door:
** Dear milkman: I've just had a baby, please leave another one.
**Please leave an extra pint of paralyzed milk.
**From now on please leave two pints every other day and one pint on the days in between, except Wednesdays and Saturdays when I don't want any milk.
**Sorry about yesterday's note, I didn't mean one egg and a dozen pints, but the other way round.
**Please leave no milk today. When I say today, I mean tomorrow, for I wrote this note yesterday.
* Please don't leave any more milk. All they do is drink it.
** Sorry not to have paid your bill before, but my wife had a baby and I've been carrying it around in my pocket for weeks.
**Please send me a Government form for cheap milk, for I have a baby two months old and did not know about it until a neighbour told me.
**Please send me details about cheap milk as I am stagnant.
**My back door is open. Please put milk in 'fridge, get money out of cup in drawer and leave change on kitchen table in pence, because we want to play bingo tonight.
**When you leave my milk please knock on window and wake me because I want you to give me a hand to turn the mattress.
**Milkman, please put the coal on the boiler, let dog out and put newspaper inside the screen door. PS : Don't leave any milk.
**No milk. Please do not leave milk at No. 14 either as he is dead until further notice.Johnno
Everyone has a photographic memory, some just don't have film.

Living in Brooklyn, NY, we had a milk man. He was treated like a member of the family. Back then, late 1940s through mid 1950s, there was very little class distinction and if personalities matched up everything was cool. He and family were invited to holiday cookouts etc.
In 1958 we moved from Brooklyn to Cardiff-by-the-Sea, California. Naturally we got a milkman. My father had a heart attack the following year. As the milkman, Don, would come by mid morning while my mother was working and I was in school, Don would make coffee and have a coffee with my bedridden father. We got to know Don and his family. About a year later, Don's daughter, same age as I, (How can I phrase it for a family forum.) became with child. He cornered me, demanding to know if it was me. I could only say that I wished it was me. Then he asked if I knew. When I said yes but I can't say who with any significant degree of certainty. He just looked at me and then hugged me. For the next couple of years I got a token birthday present from Don.

My wife is the oldest of four. A brother 1 year younger, a sister 9 years younger and a little brother 18 years younger.
The sister has different color eyes, different color hair and is generally taller than the others. The private joke is that she is the milk man's.
There seems to be a lot of truth in the poster.

Crocy,
Be nice to them. They are going to choose your 'Assisted Living' facility and later your 'Nursing Home'.
And when either are awarded the Nobel Prize, you'll be able to point to the girl and tell all the other old methane gas clouds in the facility, "She is mine."

Angela Merkel has a doctorate in quantum chemistry, her husband Joachim Sauer is a professor of theoretical chemistry. Arguably, Angela Merkel has been one of the best world leaders for the last decade and a bit.
My wife's brother in-law in Germany is an electronics engineer, and has a doctorate in physics, his eventual top job was almost at the top of an extremely large world wide German company. His son has a doctorate in physics and found it difficult to get a job for close to a year after getting his doctorate, despite part time employment in his chosen field. Eventually he found a rather unique job and is seemingly pretty happy. His sister has a doctorate in physics as well, after around a year and a bit she also picked up her first paying job and lives in one of the most beautiful German cities, which would not be affordable on a lesser pay scale.
One of my wife's sisters has a son with a doctorate in industrial chemistry, currently he lives in Germany and cycles to work in Switzerland (in the summer).
I'm not saying it will be easy, but in the main, people with quite usable skills don't get them by just attending their education facility then swanning off, they are often quite driven. I'm sure both of Crocy's daughters will do well overall.
Mick.
