Welcome to add your own. Apologies if anyone is offended by the jokes. I don't think that was the intention within the video.

So much of that is a documentary, not a joke. It's funny, though. I've had people who want hand-made jobs for less than the cost of materials, and then I've had people who've thrown in a 'bonus' on top of the agreed price, and they're not always the people who can most afford it.

I have learnt to say "not interested " anymore to requests for jobs.

I am only a hobbyist and my main job is not in woodworking but a retired client knew that I had an interest in woodworking and asked me to make some bespoke rocking stools that he & his wife use for their feet & legs in front of the sofa.
He had some made up years ago by an old relative that has since past away but the existing ones had broken.

I decided to take it on as a bit of an exercise and was prepared to put in more time than I would get paid for. As I had to make the rocking piece out of a wide board of timber and I didn't have any of the necessary width in my stacks, I purchased some suitable board. As they only came in 5.4 metre lengths, I did some calcs and worked out that if I purchase all the timber required I could build 4 rocking stools. The cost of the timber all up was approx $110 so I spend a few weekends making the items and thought that if I asked $45 each then at least I would recoup the material costs and worked out that my effort and use on my machinery worked out about $2.50/hour.

When finished, the retired client came to the workshop and said he was very pleased with the result...I told him how much I wanted for the stools and he said that he would take 2 of them. I was now left with 2 of the rocking stools that I DIDN'T WANT OR USE, I was also $20 out of pocket on materials and did the work for $0/hour.

Never again.....only work on jobs for myself now.

I am only a hobbyist also but if anyone, other than family, asks me about making something I tell them that they are number 201 in a queue of 199.

At the moment, I have just completed a new top for a TV table for the next door neighbour. He has already paid for the timber and as he mows my small bit of lawn out the front when he is doing his own and also hands a few eggs over the fence, I reckon we might be more than even.

    Hi,
As the old saying has it "There is nought as strange as folks."

I love the line "I've seen pieces like this at IKEA that are cheaper".......then go buy it at IKEA.

People want bespoke custom made goods at mass produced prices.

I have two approaches for work 'outside of the shop.' (Inside the shop I do what the boss wants. It's his responsibility to handle clientele. )

Either I'm personally interested - it may be a challenge - in which case I'll do it redonkulously cheaply, basically for cost, but with the proviso of 'no guarantees.'

Or I work out the cost and add a zero to the end. Any haggling will result in the price going up, not down. It works for me...

As for that vid, those people are nuisances but forgettable. The real PITAs are the clients who accept the quote, wait until you're irrevocably committed and then try to haggle etheir way out of paying the balance due.

They get soooo upset when you won't hand over the piece. 'But it's mine! I ordered it!'

Tell that to Mr Chop-saw as he repurposes the parts for something else.
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.
