Default 3018 cnc upgrade power supply cutting out

    Hi,

I own a 3018 cnc and recently upgraded the spindle with a 500 watt jobby and all went well until I turned it on the other day and when plugged in, the spindle spins for a few seconds and then stops.

This happens each time I plug it in.

I've attached a pic of the power supply.( I hope) .Spindle power supply.jpg

I've tried to power the new spindle form other 12 volt sources but there is very little power for the cutting bit.

I don't know where to start looking on the board so any help appreciated.

    Thanks

    Greg

Has it worked since you upgraded or did the problem occur from the first time you tried it?

Can you post a picture of the label on your actual power supply that shows the input and output voltages and power? (I am concerned about whether that's really a low-voltage supply. I would stop using it for now.)

How are you powering the motor speed controller?
What voltage is the new motor?
Those speed controllers put out around 10-50V DC.
Is the speed controller rated for 500W?
Those were the droids I was looking for.

    Hi,

    Thanks for the reply..

The power supply was fine for a few months. I have enjoyed the extra power of the larger spindle and then it just starting playing up.

I've changed nothing. I just plugged it in one day and then it wouldn't run for longer than a few seconds.

The spindle will run off the 3018 circuit board but has no torque. It bogs down as soon as the bit touches the wood.

I've tried it with an old laptop supply at 20 volts but that's not much better.

When the power supply was working, the speed and torque were great.

I've ordered another power supply so I'll see how that one goes.

The power is direct from AC at 240 volts.

When I ordered the power supply and spindle, they came together so I assumed they were compatible.

The spindle has no labels or details on the body at all.

The speed controller is supposed to supply 0 to 100 volts dc.

    Is the spindle water cooled?

Given it's 240V, this is probably the best option rather than trying to figure out whether a specific component has failed. Hope it sorts it for you.

Did the power supply come with an attached potentiometer to control speed or is there a connection between the power supply and your control board so you can still control the speed via software?
