i have an ER11 , and are limited to 8mm bits , the wider the bit , the quicker the sacrificial layers get cut , you can get 1/4 inch shanked bits with a 20mm wide cutter , and would probably push a 800watt too its limits , running the steppers hard ( pinch of salt , i only own a 1.5kw)

ive stalled the 1.5kw with a 4mm bit in aluminum , the bit only broke when the spindle stopped with an error code ( the machine kept going )

i had a peace of waste buckle under and get the full 4mm deep cut 3/4 of the 4mm bit wide at 1200mm /min , the chatter ( vibration ) was huge , but the spindle shut down before the bit broke , and the machine snapped the bit , while i was frantically hitting the -% feed button with the mouse , trying to save the bit ( hate the big red button )

An ER16 collet doesn't really help all that much. You need to go to an ER20 to hold the 1/2 inch router bits.

I have air cooled spindles and they do run at 24,000 RPM - I run a tacho on them to check speed control in Mach3 so have verified it. I run them all day at 24,000 without any problems.
I prefer air cooled as it is less complex without pipes, pump and a bucket. Air cooled are also a fair bit lighter without the cooling jacket.

Thanks Rod, the ER16 only goes to 13/32" so would be able to use a 10mm bit, don't know how many of those there are around.

Thanks for clearing up the water vs air cooled spindle, glad my thinking wasn't too far off the mark. Not really that keen on having water circulating through a spindle above all that electrickery.

yer i mainly went water because of grinding Carbon fiber , carbon dust conduits electricity , shouldnt be a problem since electric motor brushes are carbon , and spread there dust inside the motor , but who knows

Check with him but the spec says F65 x 245 then the description says 80 by 245.
In the tables there is no listing for a 245mm long spindle but there is a 65 by 205 air cooled spindle that is 1.5kw.
He is an on seller and it is a really bad job of copying and pasting.
I think you will find it is 65 diam on an air cooled 1.5kw but make this point clear to the seller.
Thw water cooled are 80mm to allow for the cooling jacket.

What you are saying makes sense though, but there any number of 65mm water cooled spindles listed on Ebay.

Speaking of on selling (and getting way OT ...), I saw a post on cnczone.com where they were discussing whether one Chinese eBay seller was better than another when someone posted an email from their seller contact that showed a lot of sellers to be just fronts for a single trading company. Message read:

I bought my 6040 from eBay seller tool-zoom. I requested a manual on setting up as none was supplied. just looking at the email I received and it was from lovehappyshopping c/o Shanghai Taiyou Trading Co. Ltd.

I had a fair idea they were a front for the same company - I have dealt with four of those sellers.

Fred,
You are not going to get a straight answer from them. Convenient language lapses and the way they deal is typical of what you are getting. You have to be patient and ask only one question at a time and word it so there are only two answers - yes or no.
Despite your concerns I have have got numerous spindles (over ten) and VFD's and not had a problem with one of them. I got what I wanted and they all worked.

Always go with the big ones. The slightly smaller size of the spindle is no help at all when it comes to Z clearance as this is dependant on the distance from the bottom of the spindle carrier to the top of the table. In other words, you can just move the spindle higher in its mounting clamps.

Edit: Damn I just read the rest of the thread and found that several others had already told you exactly the same thing.

I wish I had got a more powerful motor for mine.

BTW I bought an electronic rev counter from eBay and according to it, my spindle is within 20 rpm of the speed it says on the readout. That is pretty good I think.

Agree but two things you haven't considered are the weight between the 800w and 1.5kw spindles and that doubling the spindle amps may exceed total amps draw on the power point.
I know you got your power sorted but people entering into this should be made aware of how the amps build up with a computer, power supplies, spindle and pumps/vacuums.

I just got a new mill and had to put a 20 amp industrial plug in the shed - not cheap and not something you really want to outlay if you don't have to.

Thanks for the tip. I may have a use for the 3 phase in the shed after all!
I only have a single 10 A GPO installed in the shed plus a 3 phase (no neutral) socket.
