It's frightening Bob, I've run it down to 100mm/m and 50 acc and it looks like it might be just about behaving. I'm still thinking there might be a prob with the computer, so when I get back from the South I'll find a relatively new one to try. All else fails, I suppose it's throw out the controller and buy a gecko.

    Thanks,

    Ian

Hmmmm. When you installed Mach3 (assuming that this is what you are using) you did run the driver test didn't you?

I am running Mach3, Bob, but I haven't done a driver test. I am now presuming that will be the next step I take when I get to Perth tomorrow evening. Thankyou for the info. I'll post the results.

Mine is a Chinese one Mike, I was asking the question about whether I needed to change to a Gecko straight up earlier, but thought we'd give the original a go first. The computer was the first problem identified, it didn't put out a consistent frequency, Geoff(Simsy) has been helping and written up some test code to suit the tool I'm using to start off with.

What are the mods that need to be done Mike? are the problems I'm having similar to what the mods will fix?

Hey Bob, I ran the drivers program (after I eventually found it) The wonders of searching on the net.

It stayed in the green all the way through and I ran it several times. Just to help a bit I also installed another 1gb of ram, now it has 2gb. A bit late to run it up now, I'll give it a try in the morning. I relooked at the frequency after I installed the extra ram, it is now sitting over 25000 all the time, where as before it would drop back to 24600 ??

Have been searching for mods to the controller but haven't found anything yet.

    Thanking you all.

    Hi Ian

The extra memory wouldn't (shouldn't) have changed anything in the driver tests. It is purely a test of the ability of the paralell port to put out pulses.

2gb of RAM is the maximum that XP can handle and is really not required for Mach3. 500 meg is more than sufficient for a computer dedicated to running your CNC.

A better thing to do would be to optimise the computer for Mach3 as per their instructions here.

Also, try a couple of speeds that are a little more than you require. Sometimes it makes things go a little more smoothly. (Note the requirement to restart the computer if you change the kernel speed settings.)

Almost certainly the same problems. Read this link Experience with carving-cnc.com 6040 router - CNCzone.com-The Largest Machinist Community on the net!.
Do your boards look like the ones in that link?
Can't remember if i have enough spare parts to do all the mods to another machine but have some of them. I'm in Freo so not too far away.

Strangely enough, I just took the lid off and my controller inards look exactly like that one, even has yoocnc written on it. Is it worth doing the mods? If you think so, give me an estimate, if I'm allowed to help, better add annoyance/talking time, food and drink to the total.

Wife & I fly out for QLD tonight, back on the 12th, think I've had enough of travelling, though this trip has a holiday component and I'm sure I need it. Look forward to hearing from you.

    Thanks,

    Ian

Mine seems to work fine. Parts cost is about $25 so it was worth a try to me.
Give me a call when u get back and we can arrange something. I will check if i have enough parts left.

    Hi Ian

Glad you're getting some help with your control box. I can help with other things but the control box innards is not for me to play with.

Mechanically though, your machine seems OK and probably only needs a little bit of tweaking.

When you get back and get the controller fixed, I'll come over again for another "play".

Then we'll have to give you a bit of a run through on producing your own Gcode.

    Enjoy your trip.

    Cheers
    Geoff

    Life is just so good,

I can understand Geoff, electrics can be daunting, it takes me awhile to get my head around the basics. Very windy here today on the Gold Coast, all day, hasn't stopped, at least we were inside learning for most of it.

I'm looking forward to getting back I've got so many ideas going through my head, the visitors from Melbourne gave me a better idea of how to make a jig up to disassemble the pallets faster.

    Catch up soon,

    Thankyou all

Somebody stole Mike, I think maybe he got abducted.
Haven't been able to catch up with him since mid November.
I've had to put the router on the backburner whilst I fill some orders for my dogbed kennels.

Not real happy about that, though I am happy I've got some work coming in.
Put a shielded cableonto the spindle cause I'm sure that'd be the next thing to look at.
