That one isn't the same as an LCD display. It's only useful for making voltmeters etc. Displays 200, 20.0 or 2.00 with 200mV applied, but can't display alphanumeric characters like an LCD can. LCDs are much more complicated to drive, (a micro is needed), but far more versatile.

Edit: grunto, would a 16 x 1 character LCD suffice? If so pop me a PM and I'll post one or two down. I have about a dozen sitting here doing nothing. I'll never use them. My eyes aren't up to electronics any more.

    Guys,

Thanks for all the thoughts and ideas - I have had a few PMs which have offered assistance far above and beyond what I would expect. This forum is generous beyond belief!

    Status as of today:

    1. Going to buy a Dremel Trio - not necessarily because it will be used for this job but because I want one now! So far the best price is Bunnings (seem even cheaper than eBay!) for a 240VAC version. If anyone knows where I can get them cheaper please let me know.

    2. Have bought a Jiffy box at Jaycar and going to get the son to do a prototype one by hand - will be good for him to do something by hand to appreciate what is required. I will be interested in how he goes - I will post a photo of his efforts!

Looking forward to hearing more suggestions.

    Grant

Learning to use a file flat and accurately is a really useful skill, and even with all the toys in the world, knowing how to knock off a burr or re-set a cutting edge on just about anything with a file will always come in handy.

The best way to clean the edges on perspex is with a scraper, a file leaves horrible ridges in perspex.
Then carefully flame it with a gas torch.
I bought one from JayCar like they used in Master Chef for meringue, it worked great.
Every day is better than yesterday

    Cheers

That's true, but a Jiffy box is ABS, not acrylic/perspex, and usually black.
