    Default Air or water???

Apologies for all the questions, but you guys are really great at knowing what is what.
latest query is what is better - air-cooled spindles or water-cooled spindles?
There doesn't appear to be much difference in price.
also, what is the most useful collet range - is er11 sufficient for most work (I only envisage ever using cutters up to about 10mm), or should I look at something larger, like er20?
    Cheers

I only have a water cooled spindle so can not comment on the air cooled ones. Rod has both and should be able to comment.

These are the maximum collet sizes in the smaller ER range.

    ER11 - 7mm
    ER16 - 10mm
    ER20 - 13mm
    ER25 - 16mm

I have run the air cooled for about half an hour so too early to comment about it yet.
I have only bench tested the water cooled ones so not much I can help you with today.
    Cheers,

I would think the watercooled ones would be alot better, as less chance of it getting hot compared to the aircooled = longer life id recon.

All the professional ones that I have seen or worked on are air cooled...
Before committing to anything try checking out what the big boys do first..

Hi niall we don't have the big boy budgets and setups either and commercial spindles cost a crap load last time I looked, I would be happy for you to find me one under a grand if you can thats for sure keep me in mind if one falls off a truck.

The reason I got a liquid cooled spindle was because that's all that was on offer at the time I didn't have an alternative, Rods got an air cooled one one but hasn't given it a real long run yet but hopefully he will be able to give us an idea on the difference in noise levels temps etc in the future.

Mine is whisper quite and I am happy with it the water setup is a bit of a drag running the lines etc but when you get it done its all good.

Some 3D jobs can take hours to complete I think water cooling is good in that repsect as it should keep it at an even operating temeperature with the right setup.

The question is I guess why are all the chinese CNC routers factory standard with water cooling whats the reason behind it? longevity maybe as someone else has said, keeps unit cheaper? cant be sure yet but I will say I am happy with mine and I payed way more then most of you .
