    Default An aluminium plaque/sign

Believe it or not this is the first aluminium cutting job I have done on my big router. Mostly al stuff happens on the mill.

The young (18) bloke over the road is trying to start a business doing some custom car parts. I like to encourage this sort of effort when I can.

Anyway he wanted this done to have in a car which he is entering in a show soon.

I don't like the "custom" font. I have had people look at it and ask "what does it say?" But that's OK, it is his design and what he wants.

I'll do some more of this sort of thing. It can improve as I get a bit of experience. Design and ways to make fonts look right.

Nice job Greg. The font works in the context of the sign so you can make out what it says. If it was used elsewhere I can see it might be hard to read what it says.

Did you use paint to highlight the blacknight and the border?

No I just rubbed it all down with fine steel wool to get off the burrs. That sort of left a bit of black residue in the grooves.

I guess if it was cleaned down with some solvent it might get rid of that.

Classy and I agree with John it sits well with the theme. Reminds me a bit of the written "Holden" badge on the old FC's onwards.

I do a lot of ally and a few brass plaques (?) and will try to finish it before I start. Now allowing for my hiberian sense of humor what I am saying is polish the ally plate before you engrave. It is a lot easier and you do not round the edges of the engraving.
If you are going to colour it then the paint comes off a lot easier as well. Use an artists brush and air to remove the swarf after engraving.

Another method I have recently discovered it to put a very fine sanding disc in a random orbital sander and then hit it with that after you have finished engraving and colouring. Again this process stops rounding the edges of the engraving. The random orbital action gives a very good semi matt finish.

Hope the young fellah likes it and he does well in his new venture.
    Cheers,
    Rod
