    Thanks greg,

    I was looking at the AT5 belts and pulleys from pies. Did your motor have tension adjustment/slotted holes?

    Yeah your right. I meant AT5. I found Pies expensive but I don't know any better options.

    I made slotted mounting holes for the motors. However if doing it again I might make an idler for adjustment and to wrap the belt further around the small pulley.

    It is not a problem but I need the belt fairly tight which makes the bearings in the motor work hard.

    Yeah i think ill stick with an idle roller. Its extra work but i think it would be worth it and like you say it would be easy to engage the extra teeth. Im not sure which deisgn i like know, either way the main thing i want is to enclose the pinch points for safety.

    Some of the machines i have seen use 20mm rails on the x axis these machines are able to route 20 mm alloy in a couple of pass's , so this should do most people. These machines are less than five years old are still going strong and are used in the kitchen,
    caravan and plastics industries..

    You need a electric brake on the z ,so when you turn off the machine the brake comes on
    so it does not end up on the bed by the morning...

    Well they were using 3.5kw up to 7kw spindels. so one bed fits all.

    Hey Guys,

    Well been slow lately, but i am moving forward again. The steel i ordered arrived yesturday and it is sitting in front of the channels waiting to be turned from a pile of junk into a lovely frame. Its times like this that i wish i had a mig welder to do it all which would make it quicker. It is on the list(much like alot of other things) for the big red guy but alas with all the house talk i dont think ill be getting anything much.

    But as soon as the frame is complete this machine will be well on its way. I just need to finalise some things for the spring engaged R&P and get it all mounted. Then its just the gantry to be done and then save save save for the never gecko drives (hoping to save enough to have it all controller by a GREX eventually).

    LOL. Well actually when i really think about i have two but ill have to borrow one soon probably from you. With all this rain around i want to get it up off the floor, oh and it gives me something to do on the weekend now. lol.

    Good news,

    Frame is almost completely welded up. I am not overly happy with my welding job on one side but it will do for now. I will either save up and get the frame built by a pro or if possible ill try and save the other frame. Either way it will get me going until i finish the cnc and then i can sort it out. Just need to get some 10mm plate for the flanges on the middle braces and for the bottom of the feet. But its getting there. Will take photos when the frame is done.

    Well i thought i might update everyone on the progress since its been so long.

    Good news is that it is moving ahead. Not as fast as i would like but hey. I have the basic frame complete and have the angle for the bottom of the channel ready to drill and mount which will straighten up the legs of the table and put everything into alignment. The wood for the tabletop is ready too. I have purchased the wheels to make it easier to move around and will sort out how to mount them as i will also be having leveling feet which will lift the table off the wheels and stabilize it all. The pulleys and belts have been ordered for the main axis and the gantry beam need to be ordered this week. Im stuck in 2 minds. Ive seen the 120x80 heavy extrusion that most have used but then i have also seen 160x80 which when i put the calcs into a beam calculator it reckons will only deflect 0.02mm under 50kgs. Which do people recommend. Am looking to order it this week and get the sides cut soon.

    So hopefully with all the parts ill make time to get out and get a big chunk of it all done.

    Hi Daniel,
    I doubt you would hang 50kg off the Y axis so you might get away with the 120 by 80. If there is not a lot of price difference then the larger beam would be preferred.

    Hey Rod,

    Yeah i agree. I am very doubtful i would hang that much off it. The reason i used that amount is mainly for a safety factor while doing the calcs. I'm hoping that there isn't too much difference between the two as i would like the bigger one since it will make the rails spaced out just a tad more for more stability. Ive got my fingers crossed since i might have some old stock form a supplier which should keep the price down.

    Thanks for the other post too. Its been bugging me since i hate rust.lol.

    I was going to do the same if my frame was a problem, get a local welder to weld it up, they did my first cnc router frame which was spot on, but because the current one does not need to do 3d routing it shouldnt be a issue.

    BTW sent you a pm about the alu.
