What is backlash? Good article plus a questions
Having a good look around the forum there is a stack of good information but a lot of it comes up in general discussion in threads that are titled as something completely different, which makes it hard to track down
I had a quick question about ballscrews and backlash and tried google and it came up with this little article that explains it very well so I thought i'd post it up in a new post.
What is backlash? Detail of CNC machine tool backlash in ballscrews, bearings, gibs, and servo backlash.
Also a question regarding backlash and ballscrews - by definition are ballscrews anti-backlash in their design or is it an additional feature that can be built in? The reason I ask is that some of the ballscrews on LMB are labelled "anti-backlash" and some aren't. I'm looking at a complete rail/ballscrew/bearing/coupler kit from LMB for my first CNC and in the titles it never says "anti-backlash" - is this because the kits don't have anti-backlash ballscrews or is it just to keep the item title from becoming too long?? I'm very much just getting started on this so excuse my question if it makes you do this ->
Thanks,
Travis

Without getting too technical:
Ballscrews are classified in a C rating. He sells C7 which is the bottom end of ballscrews while C1 are the top. C1 screws will cost you multiples of the C7.
It has to do with linear accuracy eg + or - 0.01mm over 300mm. A C7 screw is rolled while the C1 will be machined and ground.
C7 are affordable and very good for the machines we build. Backlash in the nut is a result of how the ball bearings are stacked in the nut.
I think you will find it is just a listing convenience as his screws are all the same - ask him anyway.Cheers,
Rod
