Most here I believe use 16mm ballscrews 5mm or 10mm pitch,
For the drivers if you have the cash you cant go wrong with gecko drives. GeckoDrive G540 or G251 drivers, I always recommend them.
About the motors I have heard some real good results with gecko drivers running at 48V for the smaller Nema 23 motors, but I would be going with the higher end of Nema 23 motors.

You cant beat the G540 it seriously rocks my boat worth ever cent that's for sure and has an inbuilt BOB.I like to move it move it, I like to move it.

Not to undercut Chris, but you may want to consider Peter Homanns combo.
Check the thread he posted the other day in this section (G540 Combo)

Motor Calcs
Just before you spend all your pocket money on your motors (then a suitable controller) you might like to run through this motor calculator which I found over at cnczone.
Free stepper/servo motor size calculator! - CNCzone.com-The Largest Machinist Community on the net!
Good luck. I'm just starting to draw up plans for my x stage.. I'm itching to get my PC to move something...

Some more in depth stuff
Hi, I found the actual docs I was referring to over at cnczone.
This stuff was really helpful (to me) and I learned a thing or two.. like your steppers can be too big...
There are two files here; A pdf with an explaination, and an excel spreadhseet with some calcs where you can just plug in some values.. this spreadsheet is based on the info in the pdf.
Goodluck!
