Brush For Dust Collection
Hi All,
Read a post just now that mentions a Brush suitable for Dust collection. I have been able to talk with an industrial brush company Rep regarding this. This company makes brushes which may be suitable.
I have a sample, where the bristles are about 18mm long, held together by a metal piece about 3mm wide. Bristles are quite stiff, but others are available. It could easily be bent into shape. Anyone think it could be suitable.
The Rep said to me, "let me know what size is needed and I will see if I can get some samples".
The picture shows a rather larger one. Company is Melbourne based and easily accessible for me, since they service where I work.
Regards,
Albert

Hi Albert,
18mm might be a bit short unless you made a floating head on your dust extractor.
e.g. cutting through 25mm material would cause it to bind.
Stiffer bristles are better so they are not easily pulled back by the vacuum and not too stiff to mark your material.
I have tried many variations of dust collection and found that unless you are willing to run a 100mm vacuum line to the router then it is not worth the effort. Not trying to discourage anybody from having a go themsleves so long as you are aware of the limitations of distance from vacuum.Cheers,
Rod

Hi Rod,
This sample I have is a piece the Rep had in his car. I am sure there are longer bristles available. Personally, I have not got that far yet, so I will cross that bridge when I get to it.

Albert,
What is the length of the bristles in the first photograph? My feeling is that we would want something with about 50mm long bristles of medium stiffness and probably about 5mm wide. I have just been fiddling with dust extraction designs as my machine is still lots of bits as I have been too busy to put it together. I was planning to build during November, but it looks more like December now!!
Cheers,

Yea doesnt look big enought, just thinking why not use flaps of some sort of material? I've got one in mind but cant remember its name, the hymn books were covered in it when I went to school (christian school)
Its on the tip of my tongue but for the life of me I cant remember.
Also I think it would be cheaper to just get some sort of stiff painting brush and making it yourself.

You're probably thinking of something like canvas, but I don't think it would be stiff enough and would be sucked up into the dust extractor, rather than 'sweeping' the surface of the material.

Hi Alan,
As I said above, these bristles are about 18mm, while the ridge is about 3mm, but the bristles are quite stiff. If I can gather a list of specific requirements, I could then find out if the Rep can match the need.
I have another length of this brush, but with longer bristles. As far as cost is concerned, whatever I decide on for myself will most likely be free, which is about the best price for anything.
First problem is to find out if it is actually suitable.
Regards,
Albert

I am really a super-novice in relation to these sort of questions! It would be good if Rod or Greg, in particular, could shed some light on the problem. I know from earlier posts by Rod, that he seems to enjoy the cloud of dust (my interpretation, not Rod's words!!)
Cheers,

Brushes
Hello Chaps
This sort of prompted some action, the dust / mud brushes that semi's use to keep the wheels clean looked like it would be ideal for a dust skirt, I ordered 2m lof " brush " today, it is bendable and at $25.00 PM for 75mm long bristles should be long wearing and cheap, I won't get it until late next week but will post a photo when here.
