Well the LCD monitor has stopped playing up so that's a win, but ...
The G540 won;t come out of fault mode. I've grounded pin 10 (ENABLE) and the parallel port is connected OK.
Time to read those G540 documents. Another pot of coffee coming up
Edit: SUCCESS! movement of all 3 axis. I had to flip the switch to disable the charge pump on the G540, seems it's not getting it from the computer.I still need to do motor tuning and set the other parameters but I can go to bed happy.
Tomorrow , the spindle!Geoff

yes we all remember satisfaction of the " 2nd running " after tossing the china drivers and getting a mob of gecko's to do it properly
changed out your axis 4 core cables?( any sign of feral axis movement is the china 4 core cables braking , 10 hours in mine ) just a heads up , over 200 hours and still going on "jaycar 4 core "
please put a dam good earth on your machine before you turn on your spindle
Bolt the VDF to the top out side of the pc case ? , the pc case will shield the low voltage stuff , believe it or not , after 1 day of running on my pc case set up , my geckos turned up and i changed my set up ,to a cupboard with positive air pressure electronics are above and separate enclosed machining area ( machining carbon fibre , carbon is conductive , my reason )
lol i just read this thread from start to end
ken
ps , what do they call a mob of gecko's ??????
PPS google came up squat , looking at my walls , they dont like to be together at all , so a " brawl " of gecko's would best fithow come a 10mm peg dont fit in a 10mm hole

The term 'grammar nazi' was invented to make people, who don't know their grammar, feel OK about being uneducated.

I hadn't thought of that but, yes, the colour is pretty close to the T range.
I chose the colour because Bunnings had Knights spray cans on special and the only other colour besides orange was blue. Covers for the enclosure are black (goes with anything does black..)Geoff

Beware of antivirus software!
I didn't get the spindle going today, I got sidetracked with a chainsaw
I did spend a frustrating half hour trying to find a noise in the 6040. It was a regular 'beat' in the X axis (and as is turned out, the Y axis but I didn't think to check that) as I moved the gantry in either direction.
Assuming a mechanical problem, I adjusted everything I could to no avail. Rebooted the computer and noticed that SpyBot was running. This is not really needed as the machine is not on a network so decided to stop it.
Magic! the noise has now gone away! not sure what SpyBot checks every second or so but it interferes with Mach3 when it does it.
EDIT: It's working but it doesn't sound right. Nothing loose as far as I can tell. Have a listen.

Might have to send the router plate back for machining Geoff.
The sound is like if two alli parts are rubbing
OR
the echo coming through the gap and some vibration if as though sitting on a table and it needs a damper under it piece of non slip matting or cork.

Another problem found
Certainly some machining required! One problem has been found at least.
I removed the motor from the Y axis and found the bearing is not secured, the outer race turns freely in the hole bored for it. (I say bored, gnawed might be more accurate!).
There's a good 10-15 thou clearance where there should be none.
Looks like the next job is to get the mill or lathe sorted out, another delay!.
I'll tackle the X axis next as it also makes the same noise.
EDIT: X axis similar but not as bad.
One the motor end of the ball screw, there is a single bearing but on the fixed end, there are two bearings. No way to tell if they are angular contact bearings but I doubt it . Bearing size at the fixed end is 22x10x6 and at the motor end 22x?x8.Geoff

Another test.
While I've got the motors removed, I thought I;d test them by themselves.
I'm not sure what a stepper should feel/sound like but they seem a bit rough to me. I've tried different ports on the G540 but all are the same even with different motors.
I'll play around with motor tuning a bit and seem if I can improve things.Geoff

Never assume!
In setting up Mach3, I used the G540.xml file from Gecko - got to be right I thought and didn't check the motor tuning that much (OK, at all)
. By default, it has number of Steps per set to 20000!
Assuming an RM1605 ballscrew with 5mm per revolution, 200 steps per revolution for the stepper . Using the Mach3 calculation:
Mach3 steps per unit = Mach3 steps per rev x Motor revs per unit
200 x .2
Gives a result of 400.
The motors certainly sound a lot better
I might fix the bearing issues before I go much further.Geoff
