If you are after a chunk of material to cut it from this might be suitable and it won't break the bank.

it seems with machlathe you plug the 4th axis in where the y axis is ,
and set up your gear ratio up on the yaxis ??/ i dont like that ,
will see if i can get mach 3 to use its 4th axis instead of yaxis , you would have to zero the y axis over the lathe and then change the plugs around ,before opening machlathe
did your 4th axis come with a tail stock ??? another project to make

My Chinese machine came with the 4th axis driver and a plug for it and it has a tailstock with spring loaded dead centre.
If you don't have a seperate driver and you have to use Y axis then you could set up the 4th axis in mach3 and then change in ports & pins to activate 4th axis and de-activate y axis once you are set up - have them both pointing to the same step and direction pins. This will save having to do the steps, velocity and accel. changes each time.
I sounds strange that you don't have a seperate driver for the 4th axis so I hope I have interpreted what you are saying correctly.Cheers,
Rod

Word of warning.
Don't change plugs while the machine is powered up or you will likely see smoke from the drivers.Cheers,

we have a separate driver for the 4th axis
but machlathe basic setup uses the y axis as the 4th , havent had time to look at it and change the y to 4th ,
its posable i know ,
, ive just pulled the breakout board from it , and installing the input pins ( limit switches ) to the breakout board , holes are there , just needed the pins , have a "probe" comming , and want a 1/8th jack set up ready for the probe , ( cloud stabbings )
i will opto couple all 4 on a Breakout , brake out board
only 4 limit switches , will have to use them wisely , one each for x,y z + probe ,not that the size of the steppers could bend a ball screw (no limits needed ) home yes
might bye 2 breakout boards and be done with the limitations , only bought the old pentium 4 because it had 2 printer ports
(xyza home on 1 pin ?)
just thinking does MACH allow for serial input? , ie , binary count on 4 inputs , could turn them into 16 inputs if it does
( a chip with 24pins , has 16 inputs , and 4 outputs , if a leg of that chip's input go's "high" ( 5 volts ) (1-16 legs ) the 4pin output gives a binary count ie 0001 for 1 , 0010 for 2 , 0011 for 3 , 1111 for 16 ), i hope that made sense
as long as 2 inputs carnt happen at the same time , it should be fine (edit ) whoops a 3millisecond delay would stuff up the timing , ignore the last lines, and now rethinking the opto couples after the brake out board , ill just risk blowing up the original board (edit again), the stepper drivers have to run through an amplifier chip so there is a 3 millisecond delay on the motor output , my brain is hurting , ill have to sleep on it

Have a look at Smoothstper. USB input and two parallel port outputs. Just cable from the smoothstepper to your Chinese parallel port BOB and whack in another BOB to the second port.
You can also have more than one Mach3 profile and just load the one you need at the time.
Couple of different ideas there.Cheers,
Rod

this is driving me up the wall ,
had it running last week , turn it on today , nouthin , there is an extra wire going to the motor driver board "EN" , it must be an "enable wire" , now to find its pin number
lol had it running last week , should have left it alone , but i thought id remove the mach3 software i have messed with for 1 year , and start with a fresh copy
yes i didnt make a copy of machmill the first time ,i have now
at least ill be able to help boomer if i can get this fresh mach3 to work

not too shore if its the right thing to do but
in the output settings of the ports and pins page set the
digital trigger , enable = tick , port = 1 , pin number = 14 , active low = tick
this gets it all up and running with the same pins and port info listed before for the steppers
edit
" borsh series 4 axis cnc controller " from www.cncdiy.org the WALTER 6545 ( 6545L ) , <<<< i just added all that info incase some one is searching for setup info
the photo's below are of my settings that are different to the setup PDF from the manufacturer
once you have typed them in and saved them , hit the "reset button" in mach3
then press your emergency stop button on top of the controller , that will test if you have the right "Port Address" and/ or the Driver is installed
you will be getting your CNC to do laps in no time
any chance of getting the pin - pin connections your brother in law did to your spindle cable ?, thats next up for me to fix

just been poking around the spindle driver with a multimeter , and found its quite easy ,
on the out side of the case the spindle pins end up
1= U
2= V
3=W
4 = triangle with stick coming out of it ( earth )
on the spindle
4 is disconected from every thing so 4= 4
pins 1,2 & 3 all have 2.2 ohm between them ( the thought of Tesla and his napkin came to mind )
1-1 , 2-2 , 3-3 ,4-4 ,
just took the plug apart , lol , only 3 wires brown -1 Black -2 and blue -3

Sorry, been pre- occupied with other stuff. My gear hasn't even made it back into the shed yet, sbut I hope to get down there later today.
Was there anything you needed me to look at in my box before I go hook it all up again? Yes, only 3 wires in the spindle cable. I'm under instructions not to uninstall it due to the live output voltage pins - he doesn't want me electrocuting myself

yes the spindle out put plug on the controller is the wrong one , ( male ) yes if you stick your finger in there ,you will get fried ( and fry the controller ) , with the pug installed it should be safer
i screwed one of the spare 4 pin plugs onto it while i was getting the XYZ A axis going , with the plug screwed on to it you cant accidently stick your finger in it
i had to have the lid off the controller to follow wires and read pin details but you should be able to leave the lid on , all the hard works done
just type in the numbers and ticks as per photo's and use your setup PDF for the other stuff ( port setup , motor setup ) , and it should work ( axis controll)
havent got the spindle started yet so there are 2 more pins to find , (spindle pulse and direction )

SO I'm in the shed, trying to configure Mach3. I've put your settings in and when I hit reset, the status in Mach3 says 'External E-stop' requested. But when i push the button, nothing is happening. The water pump is running fine, pumping water through the spindle, but there is no other action anywhere.
Did you change the Kernel speed to 35000Hz as stated in their docs? I left the port at 0x378. Could that be wrong?
I note also some of their other Mach3 settings have options that mine doesn't, such as pulley settings on the Spindle setup. I also don't understand their instructions around the Motor Tuning tab. That's as far as I've progressed.
*Edit* as i said earlier, my BIL was concerned about the e-step being default closed?(i think) as normal is default open? Which ever way, i thought it was probably because it is software controlled. Dunno if this has anything to do with it.
*Edit #2*
Right, i tried the automatic input setup in Mach3. While it's trying to detect the e-stop signal, nothing happens, so either the switch isn't activating, my parallel cable is dodgy, one of the port connectors is bad, or my parrelel prt isn't working on the PC. I checked the port addss, and 378 seems right, and it says it's working OK. I'll see if i've got another cable to tryPen Affair Craft Supplies - Cheapest Pearl Ex & Pemo Polymer Clay in Australia

might be the port driver , in machs 3's folder there is a program called "drivertest.exe " run that one and see what it says ,
if you havent payed for your mach3 licence it wont work over 25000ppm i haven't paid yet so mine is on 25000
yer i havent set up the spindle yet, not many pins left to try ,so it shoild be easy , we have used 2-9 , 10 , and 14 , only 1, 16 and 17 left
if when you reset mach3 its says , e-stop has been activated , make sure the ,e-stop button is up , and reset again , if it keeps happening change the" tick" in the e-stop , pin 10 , "Active low " box to a "cross "

Ran the driver test, everything looks fine. I have bought the Mach3 license, so that's not the problem, and the test runs fine at 35,000 as well.
I found another parallel cable, but still no luck, and the diagnostic screen within Mach3 shows no input signal action happening.
Also ran the Mach3 port info script and it reports 378, so that is correct. What next? Does it sound like the parallel interface on the controller is not working? I tried jogging some axes with the pendant and nothing happens either.Pen Affair Craft Supplies - Cheapest Pearl Ex & Pemo Polymer Clay in Australia
