Bob,
Thanks for the suggestion.
I bid $1200 for this one - which was rejected. I then bid $US1600 which was accepted!
I wasn't expecting this offer to work but made it on the basis that the original price was pretty good and the savings will cover GST.
Now to pay for it!
If anyone wins with a lower bid, don't tell me or I will hate you foreverGeoff

Well done.
The lower cost will just about pay for the postage.

I can't yet comment on the quality of the CNC router but the vendor's shipping is first class.
I just received an email advising that my router had been posted. On checking the provided tracking number (with Couriers Please), found that the package is already in Hobart!
Not bad seeing I only ordered it about 23:30 on the 19th.
I'd better start reading up all about Mach 3.Geoff

Thanks Rod,
Only problem I'll have is finding somewhere to set it up. While the place I'm staying has a shed, it's rather full and it has no power! I don;t think the house owners would like me setting it up in the lounge roomGeoff

After sitting in Melbourne for a few days, my router is in Hobart. Delivery was attempted yesterday but no-one home.
One concern is that the vendor lists the weight at 58kgs but the courier docket says 2 packages each of 12kgs. A total of 24kgs seems a bit light. I'll try and pick it up tomorrow if they allow that.
I'll start a separate thread when I do get my hands on it so I can avoid hijacking this one with lots of dumb questions
weighs
Edit: Just got an email from the vendor, only 2 packages but each weighing 29kgs. Better pick up the trolley tomorrow.Last edited by snowyskiesau; 27th July 2011 at 09:41 PM. Reason: Update status

I was shocked when mine turned up and the missus suggested I clean out the spare office and set it up in there, I thought it was off to the shed for me.

Heh, if I end up with one, it'llbe as far from the house as possible I reckon
So anyway, I'm back aftern a month delay waiting for work to tell me to buzz off, which they finally have done Still have to wait a month for the funds, but I might be able to advance myself.
So i went back and looked at that Walter 6545 unit again, and they've got a note on theri site now that says the unit is out of production and they only have a few units left!! So the questions are, do you think it's safe to purchase a non-production model? As long as the construction is good, I can replace all the electronics anyway, so i don't think it's an issue, unless it arrives not working immediate that is.
The other option it to wait & see if they what replacement they source, but when that might be available, and whether it will cost more or less is unknown.

So Geoff, have you got it yet?
This unit was one I looked at early on, and similar to the one I'm currently looking at. I emailed your guys originally and asked if they could supply the rotational unit they mention, but they never replied, so I moved on. Still, it sounds like you got a good price from them, with the dollar being high currently. $150 postage is pretty cheap.
Did you get hit with import duty?

Oh one other question comparing Geoff's unit and the Walter 6545. His shows working travel as 580(X) * 65(Z). The Walter shows 440(X) * 100(Z).
Any opinions on whether more width, or more height is desirable? Given I have 3D aspirations, I was going for max height, but I imagine for most work (signs etc) max width would be best. What do people think?
Thanks. Russell.Pen Affair Craft Supplies - Cheapest Pearl Ex & Pemo Polymer Clay in Australia

The Walter 6545 lists the maximum cutting area as 440x X 650y X 100z whereas the one I bought is listed as 580x X 480y X 65z. Not a lot of difference in size when you swap the XY axis.
The controller with the Walter 6545 is shown as a 4 axis controller although the 4 axis is optional. If you intend using a 4th axis, the the extra Z height would be handy,
FWIW, The seller of the Walter unit also has a Borsh range of CNC routers, slightly bigger work area (900x600x150) but at a cost of $2700.Geoff

Yeah I saw that model, and while bigger is better (according to Big river's wife anyway ) it's probably more than I need for my immediate plans. I do plan on getting the 4th axis, and the remote control, so having them all from the one supplier is what pushed me in the direction of the Walter.
For the Y-axis, when looking at my boomerangs, I'm thinking I can slide my 300 x 1200 sheet of ply in, and just keep feeding it through continuously, as the boomerangs forma continuous line along the 1200mm length. That should work shouldn't it? I can't see any obstruction each end that would stop the ply projecting past the table?

There's nothing that would prevent an unlimited length workpiece being used as long as it is less than the width of the gantry (about 500mm in my case).
Actual cutting area seems to be about 120mm less than this at about 380mm which is different that the claimed 'effective working travel' of 480mm
