Greg, the Ebay seller only lists 1 type of 4Kw spindle and VFD combo
NEW AIR-COOLE MOTOR SPINDLE 4KW AND MATCHING INVERTER - eBay Drives Motion Control, Industrial Automation, Control, Electrical Test Equipment, Business Industrial. (end time 16-Dec-09 20:39:19 AEDST)
as you can see from the specs listed there, as well as the specs Mike listed above, it is a 220-250V VFD.

Fred
The specs listed in the ebay add, are for the spindle. Not the VFD.
If you read the specs that Mike posted in doc format, the largest VFD that runs from 240v is 2.2kw. See below.
So according to that and the fact that the VFD is 4kw, then the VFD needs 380v 3 phase input. Not to be confused with output.
Some VFDs can be de-rated. Mike needs to ascertain which VFD he has and if it can be run from 240v. The ebay add does not tell him this.

Chinese Spindle
Fred
The spindle is 4KW, I guess the question now is what supply the VFD requires i.e. single or three phase and what amperage. I will check with the supplier.

Chinese Spindle
Thanks for all the help, I guess I did not know enough about VFD's and spindles. A lesson learnt the hard way. I am still waiting for a reply from the supplier.
I will scan the forum for some info on a suitable ER20 air cooled spindles and the best VFD to suit it. If anyone has any info that they can share or point me to some threads, I would appreciate it.

Hi Mike,
I was wondering why you went for a 4kw just for the ER20 collet but I can see now. That seller only offers 2.2kw in water cooled versions and not air cooled as you obviously want. I had the same trouble with an 800 watt unit and ended up going to another seller to get one. The seller seems to not want to sell air cooled spindles or is trying to force sales of his stocks of water cooled spindles.
Water cooled is not that difficult or extra cost so if this is an option you have of exchanging the 4kw unit then I would not let that stop you.
I am far from an expert but I think you will be able to run the 2.2kw spindle on the 4kw VFD. Can somebody chime in and confirm this.
So the way I see it you have two options
Exchange the 4kw spindle for a 2.2kw water cooled spindle with the same seller.
Cut you losses and sell the 4kw spindle and VFD on ebay and start again.
If you look through the posts you will see a couple of threads on spindles so search that for more information. We do get lots of repeat posts asking the same questions.Cheers,
Rod

I received a reply from the vendor which stated that it would run on either single phase or 3 phase. I wired it up as single phase and it runs smoothly. That is on a normal 10amp power outlet. At this stage after a few test runs nothing even gets warm. Hopefully all is well

Hi Mike
It will draw lots more amps when the spindle is loaded. Depending on your shed/house wiring you will be adding additional amps from the computer, monitor, driver power supply and maybe air compressor and vacuum.
Personally I would not run it on a 10 amp outlet.Cheers,

G'Day Mike'ow yer goin?
I'lld be raging mad and fair dinkum if I got that spindle. You said accept your losses.Why..Contact the guy and say you want the spindle as in the picture.
or you will leave bad feedback.Your money back would be the best to ask for.Do not delay as you can only report a bad sale for 30 days.
Yes u can run a 2.2K spindle on a 4K VFD.
A VFD is usable with single phase in,but must be de rated.
The amps at 220V is A=W/V A=4000/220=18Amps
Get a Sparky
The horse power of a 4KW spindle is 4000/746=5.36 HP.If you check 5HP spindles from Colombo,HSD Perske etc, they are probably over 20Kg..
If you need any help with how to give bad feedback let me know.
