New to CNC
Hi all, I am thinking of getting a CNC from makerstore, probably spending about $2K so nothing too complex. What I would like to do with it is to take an object, say a glass and cut out the exact outline of the object. Is this something that is easy to do and what software would I need to do this?
Thanks for any assistance,.
Cheers,
Peter

Easy? Depends on your skill level. The machine itself is only half the equation Software is the other half.
I've done similar with some success but my method needs a camera, tracing software and an idea about how you would achieve it.
You could 3d scan it, manually measure it and put the data points into a program then join the dots.
I've a post from months back now that goes over the software requirements and options, have a search here and see what you can find.

If you can take a photo of the glass from the side, Cam Bam will allow you to import it and generate g code from the photo

The trick is to take a photo of the bitem with a ruler or two included.
Then you can adjust the image so that the digital representation is accurately sized.
Working back from the machine, you need to know what input(s) the software which drives the machine will. Take, then find something that works for you to produce that.
I've used CAMBAM to trace an image for my CNC mill, and more recently used LightBurn and a laser to cut out this for a tool drawer.

There’s an Apple app toolKaiser. You can photograph what you want make a cutout for. It’s designed for Kaiser foam to make tool inserts. I haven’t tried it yet.
