A New CNC Build (cont)
Hi all. It’s been a long time since I last posted on this forum. Haven’t been too well for a few months and haven’t so much as looked at my CNC. But I’m back on the mend again and have started to play around with the machine again. Unfortunately, though, I’ve had to give up work prematurely, and am going to have to downsize my property as I can’t look after it so well any more. This means getting rid of some of my toys since I won’t have room for them when I move. I’m determined to keep the CNC though. Anyway, I’m back.
Last time I posted over six months ago, I had had some problems with the X axis ballscrew and nut and it was suggested that I should replace the ballnut. Haven’t done it yet, but I’ve got the machine moving again, and will order the required replacement parts soon.
I’ve got all the gear I need to build a console based on the Pokeys, using Rodm’s consoles as a guide. Thanks Rod. So I’ll get started on that soon.
In the meantime, I’m just playing with the machine, slowly getting a better handle on Mach 3 and VCarve Pro. Latest little project was a house number for my sister’s new house. I inlaid some pine into some merbau scrap from their deck. Looks OK but needs another coat of finish I think. Might do the same for the kids houses.
Nice to be back.
Cheers
Geoff

Nice to have you back Geoff, and very sorry to hear that you have been sick and have to downsize and give work a miss.
Hope the recovery goes well and look forward to your updates on the machine.
Daniel
P.S The sign looks great. Inlay looks like it was a tight fit.

Hi Geoff,
Good to see you surface again. Sorry to hear your news and I hope you make the best of the change in lifestyle.
You job looks great - is the inlay Vcarved or straight sided.
Hope to see more of your projects in the near future.Cheers,

Stick with it buddy - being crook isn't all it's cracked up to be.
Good to see you back on the forum - and more importantly - getting the CNC going again.
When you do get around to building a console a la Rod, you will be amazed at how good it is.
Anyway - take care
Cheers

Thanks for your good wishes guys.
I'm actually quite well now and the nasty stuff is behind me now. We just decided that it's time to start enjoying life instead of working our butts off all the time. Hence the downsizing to a retirement villa. No more lawns to mow, no more weeding, no more maintenance. It will all be done for us. All we have to do is enjoy ourselves.
The only problem is that I won't have a shed, but my sister and brother in law will be very close by and he is happy to share some shed room with me. Enough for the CNC machine. Fortunately we're great mates. He's also working to set up a "Men's Shed" in the area, so there won't be a shortage of things to do.
Anyway, thanks again. I'll start posting about my CNC again soon.
Cheers
Geoff

Sorry, forgot to answer your question. The inlays are straight sided. I haven't worked out how to cut the inlays to do it vcarved which I want to be able to do. Any tips?

Having finally got some time to use my machine, I've come to see a few shortcomings, particularly in respect to some inaccuracies resulting from hand building.
I have decided to modify things a bit, and have started to collect some materials to do a partial rebuild.
At least this time, I'll be able to use the machine as it is to machine the new replacement parts. It's certainly accurate enough to do that.
Since the forum is a bit quiet, I'll post my progress on here in case someone is interested or can make some suggestions along the way..
In the meantime, I have machined up a console which will be based on Rodm's Pokeys thread. I'll post my progress on that as well, but I'm not sure if that should be done on this thread, a new thread, or on Rod's Pokeys thread. I'll work that out when I'm ready to go.
Cheers
