CNC Lathe Tooling
Hi Guys,
The DXXX? style tool holders seem to be favoured for CNC machining. Does any know why? Is it just for the better clearance? I've been using DCMT tooling for my manual lathe. Also what tool holders are people using for external and internal threading?
Thanks
Marty

Re: CNC Lathe Tooling
I'd say it's for clearance. You can cut between two shoulders easily with a left and right dcmt (SDJCR/L holder), with a ccmt you really needed a straight facing tool as well to cut between two shoulders.
Waiting on my SDJCR/L from CTC, then will be able to get my conversion making swarf.

What conversion have you got Pippin? I just realised I incorrectly stated that I'm using DCMT inserts when it should be CCMT.

It's a conversion of a Titan Machine 7x16. My own design using ACME screws, steppers with pulleys.
I've increased the cross slide travel (doubled) with an aim to gang tooling
Still got plenty to work out, but it's basically usable at present, just need to find the damn time.
I've started a website documenting my conversion and things related to mini lathe CNC

Nice, mine's a 7x12. What did you do to increase your x travel? Did you just mill out the end of the cross slide and add a larger leadscrew?

Re: CNC Lathe Tooling
I used a longer ACME screw, mounted the nut to the end of the cross slide (rather than the existing holes).
The leadscrew bearing block was made small enough that it fits under the cross slide (there is about 0.5mm clearance). This required small bearings. So the cross slide can now pass over it rotates the operator (the travel on the stock lathe is partly limiting by the cross slide hitting where the handle mounts)
