First cut on Bitser
Still some finishing work to tidy up, but Bitser lives.
This is my first cut, as a test piece on mdf. I sealed the face with a thin shellac, but the black (rattle can) got through to the mdf. So I have got to figure out that one. The ribbon still needs to be painted pink, but I am over the moon with it as a first attempt.Chris

Good looking cnc.
What tool and depth did you us on the part you just made? Look real good.

I used VcarvePro, so the cuts are variable depth and controlled by the software. As for the bits, the Butterfly, and the lettering, were cut with a 60 deg CMT laser bit, and the ribbon was done with a 90 deg V bit.

2nd test cut (about 230mm dia), and the silly grin is back. Took just over an hour, and I haven't started to push things yet. Just starting to get a feeling for feeds and cut depths.

I await your piece when the boundries have been pushed
Edited added
Chris mind went racing to how that same design would look in a nice bit of Rosewood.

Chris,
From memory at the Melbourne BBQ weren't you a box maker or was that Geoff? I had to say from memory as that gives me an out if I'm way off the mark.
Anyway your design would lend itself to a circular box - say a compact case for the ladies or even a snuff box for the gents. I have done a quick and dirty on the attached to give you an idea. The lid would have a lip in the reverse design. Don't make your tolerances too tight as the friction will make it hard to open.
You would need to make a fixture to hold the lid to do reverse machining - a bit of MDF that you cut a circular hole in. Cut the hole then leave your machine setup and use double sided tape to hold the lid. Becasue you left the machine set up it should be perfect on X and Y axis and you only need to zero Z axis.
Just an idea to kick you along.Cheers,
Rod
