Thread: CNC Router for Under $2000?

I went with the Lead V3, 1000x1500 kit (in black) on the makerstore.com.au. Then I called them back today and upgraded to the 1500x1500 - for an extra $150 you get an extra 500mm or 62% of x capacity. I fitted it out with the HT motors and the XPro V5 controller as it appears to be Novice friendly and Fusion360 compatible. The later choice influenced by my wife (and the hobby versions is free) who is an architect and very proficient in autocad - I am hopeful that she will do all the CAD work - see the above reference about limiting all things IT in my personal life. I also got the cable mgmt pack and the high end touch probe.
To minimise upfront costs I just went with the 400W ER11 spindle bundle for $264. The makestore guys said that my only real tradeoff with this spindle selection(as I am only interested in working with wood) would be production speed . If in the future I am making money from the CNC or my hobby, I would be open to investing in a more powerful spindle. Or perhaps a birthday present another year even if I am not making any money.
In the end I forked out $2900 delivered, which is a lot more than I wanted to spend. Justified the extra cost as this will also be my fathers day and xmas present and I feel the Lead V3 and parts selected should future proof me for a very long time.

Have fun.
Free version of 360 has some limits, particularly CAM. They have removed rapids in the free version which means total run times are a lot longer.
I don't think your spindle choice will be that big a limitation.
All those machines are very lightweight. They just don't have the rigidity to run a big spindle.

Turns out you cant get a functional CNC for under $2000.
6 months in, 100s of hours fault finding and about 120 emails with makerstore.com.au and I still cant get the machine to cut to spec.
I would heavily caution anyone who was thinking of heading down this path.

When you say, "cant get the machine to cut to spec" what do you mean?

Cutting tolerances are out by 1 - 2 mm.
Makes for shocking inlays

Have you been able to talk with other users who have the same model/setup as you who may have had the same issues and got them sorted?
The person who never made a mistake never made anything
Cheers

Something seems off with 1-2 mm. My belt machine is 0.1-0.2mm and errors are almost always a configuring issue. Tight v wheels, loose belts, low Current on motors and slightly out steps vs distance travelled config.
my mind immediately goes to lead screw backlash but insufficient info to know anything about your issue with confidence.
good luck fixing.

Sound like your gantry is running out of true, I have to check mine before switching on the software to make sure it hasn't been knocked, I have 2 gauge sticks cut at exactly the same length and I use then to make sure each end of the gantry is the same distance from the end of my bed. You can only more them freely while the motors are not controlled by the software (not energised)
